Day 8 had excruciating pain inside thigh

Hi, I was using my gripper to help get my jogging bottoms off my operated leg being very careful not to exceed the 90deg rule. Suddenly, the most excruciating pain started inside my thigh (not wound) and groin. It was so bad it brought me to tears. Luckily the children were upstairs and they managed to get me flat in bed. I had something similar to this yesterday when I tried to move the pillow between my legs with the operated leg. The pain has subsided but I still have a dull ache inside my leg and a little discomfort at the site of hip bone. Has anyone experienced anything like this?

Thanks in advance

It does get better I promise you.... Did the surgeon have to stretch your muscle at all I found Norco worked the best.... I was on something called tordol it was heaven until the Damn heat flash hit I felt like I was on fire..... Main message it will be better try to do as much as you can.... Don't forget stool softners because of the pain meds they can stop you up

I forgot to add look into a sock helper kit they give you that independence back

TJ,

I had a similar experience while in the hospital.  I was trying to shift on the bed a bit and used my operated leg out of habit.  I let my nurse know, and she said that I probably rotated my knee inwards, which crossed that belly-button line you are not supposed to move your knee beyond.

Maybe your knee turned/moved too far inward while working on your jogging pants?

I'd be mindful of that, and don't be afraid to call your nurse.

Hi, thanks for your reply. Surgeon didn't mention anything about stretching any muscles. It was such a shock to get such severe pain as I've been pain free with the exception of the pain from the wound.

Can you stand on it? Have you tried ? If you can then it should be okay my physio said to me.

I have tweaks that are sharp at times but not something that was so painful...

I hope you get lots of replies to reassure you. Perhaps in the morning you could get it checked. Is it still hurting?

Agree with Rob maybe your foot turned slightly inwards. That happened to me when I moved badly over the bed - pain was bad. But eased off. Fingers crossed.

Thanks, gives me peace of mind that I may not have screwed up my THR by not being careful enough.

If it happens again I will call the hospital.

I was just rereading it and inside your thigh probably a pulled groin muscle I agree with 5rose0000 give it a night If it is still hurting then don't hesitate to have it looked.

It is like walking on egg shells! I am

scared to put a foot wrong hence be swept back to the beginning like a twisted evil game of monopoly!

I think it is not easy to dislocate, and worst case if you do they just pop it back in 9 times out of ten.

I worry about this too but my lovely physio says you would know as you can't stand, sometimes your leg shortens significantly too. I hope you are okay x

I was always told if I dislocate there's no way I won't know, pain will not get better and rose is correct you won't stand also they say your toe will turn in. Ice ice ice, best friend.

Hi Rose,

I have just braved a trip to the toilet, still have a dull ache inside the leg but nothing like before. I can weight bare on the leg so hopefully all will be ok.

Thanks

Hi deborah,

Thanks for your reply, very reassuring that I'm going to be ok. I don't know what I would have done without the forum.

Thanks lhsjr83, all being well leg will be back to normal tomorrow. I'll have to be more mindful of the positions I'm putting myself into. Will look into the sock thingy as well.

Yes - you probably twisted, even if by mistake, thats the land of dis-location I'm afraid, I had it happen in the hospital the first THR, and the nurse said if it passes your are OK, and if that severe pain stays, can definately relate to the amount of pain you were in, you may have dis-located. Be careful, your hip is not yet strong, if you have other hands in the house get them to help you with getting dressed, undressed for a few more days yet I think.

Spot on Rose. After all the time of waiting in pain for the op, the last thing we want to do is go back to square 1.

As I have had no pain since discharge I do think I have thought to myself 'this is a piece of cake, I feel like I can attempt the washing, etc.' My body has just given me a message that it doesn't agree. Back to the original plan of Christmas films, eating chocolates whilst the family do what's needed for my first six weeks. Obviously, I will be doing my physio & 2 short walks a day building up. Honestly, the duster nearly came out today! When you think of it logically though these replacements need a lot of internal healing & TLC. I wouldn't like to see my surgeons face if I dislocated mine doing something stupid after all his hard work.

Wise words lyn. I think I have been lucky this time as the pain has subsided to a thud and I can weight bare. I will be taking it very easy from now on. Not a jot more than the physio advises. I don't want to ever feel pain like that again.

Thanks

Hi TJ

Like the other hippies replies I had similar pain a few times in the first couple of weeks. I thought I had been doing all the right things and then I must have moved slightly differently and the pain was excrutiating just for a minute and then stopped but it was a bit sore for a while afterwards. I put it down to the muscles after being cut and trying to work again. Seem to have got better as I got stronger and more mobile.

Best of luck with your recovery

What everyone needs to remember as my surgeon so eloquently put through gritted teeth when i became impatient is thus....he had cut through nerves..muscle.......he has sawn your bones....he has hammered and cemented or bone graft.....BUT what we forget is....ohhh approx 1 to 5 years previous to our op our muscles deteriorated that hold the hip as we began to find ways to walk to help with the pain. So not only have they been sliced and diced but the shriveled muscles needs to get strong to hold the new hip. It has to HEAL and no amount of physio will help this.after i was told this logic information. I rested instead of pushing myself....i even quit physio..... now 12 weeks on i have no pain at all and can do 99% of everyday things. I don't even go on long walks. I can kneel down....garden....vacumn....all housework....mow lawns....etc. the only time i get a quick grabbing pain is if i turn inwards. .... i hope this helps.

How are you this morning ?

Is your hip okay?

It is a good sign you can still get around - and maybe your body warning you that dusting is out of bounds! Your post made me laugh. I am itching to get stuck into my house as well, but so far have been compromising with small achievements and putting myself out of the way of temptation. Not easy with two children whom are just about to start their Christmas holidays !

I am going out today if the weather improves. I am branching out - I have had enough of being inside!
