I went to bed with moderate but able to sleep pain. This ,owning got up and probably this morning for pain has been the worse. I am still walking with a walker. I also have arthritis everywhere on me. The pain is muscle I believe. One pain is deep down front of operated leg from the groin area to above knee. The other pain is in my buttocks. It again is deep. Can anyone tell me if this pain is normal at this stage of my recovery?
Hi Tammy,
Yes, this is very normal at this early stage. If you haven't already started, you should be getting some physical therapy (physio) very soon. The physio will get your muscles working again. They will teach you how to strengthen everything back up. Once this is accomplished, the pain in the muscles should go away.
Make sure that you use ice packs daily to help reduce pain and swelling.
Wishing you the very best as you continue to recover
Hi Tammy
Quite normal had terrible buttock and lower back pain. You must make sure you take your meds regularly to help with pain relief. Physio depends where you live. I am I Derby and didn't get any which I am sure is hindering my recovery will prob have to look at private which seems unfair....get plenty of rest and take car of yourself x
Julie
Thanks Kim,
i have aver been getting physio once a week and he left me exercises to do twice a day in which I have been doing. I am still on my pain meds but was wondering if maybe I had over done it? Thanks
thanks Julie I am taking my meds regularly and receiving physio once a week which I am doing the exercises twice a day. I am from Beeton ontario and where r u from.
Tammy,
It is quite possible that you may have over done things. I would take it easy for a day or two with your leg elevated and use the ice packs. As soon as the pain is under control, make sure that you continue the strengthening exercises. These are very important for a full recovery.
Hi Tammy, please remember that it's early days.you really must ask your friends & Family to be supportive otherwise things will take longer.regards Amanda
Hi Tammy, I am the exact same stage as you. I got a new set of exercises yesterday and they knocked me for a loop. Also I am still on a walker and still on pain meds (trying every 6 hours). I was surprised to learn from my PT yesterday that I should be icing three times a day whether there is swelling or not (opps my bad). Also she said I could walk as much as I want - so I took three very short (trust me very short) walks yesterday and I felt it.
I think at first I was doing too much and recently I have been doing too little. I guess we will find our balance as we go.
Best of luck and be good to yourself.
Oh, I also asked about the pain in buttocks, and yes, she said very normal it will go as I strengthen (in time). Also not quite sure what the pain you feel down your operated leg but I have a pain (sporadic but mighty) just to the right of the incision that feels like someone is dragging me along the asphalt. She explained that this is the nerve endings and the nerve endings while tiny are the last to heal so I will feel this for a while (it is the worst of all the pain and always has been - but it is also well controlled ((i.e. it goes away quickly)).
Hi Julie,
While I do get PT twice a week, everything she does is in a book and nothing is rocket science - seems you could find the majority online. Though I will admit it is comforting to meet with a "professional" even if once a week to reassure I am where I should be.
Is there anything available via Skype - something like tele med? Just a thought.
Hi Tammy. I was told to ice about 30 to 40 minutes at a time. I also took my pain meds by the clock. Every 6 hours for me. Don't miss a dose as the pain will take forever to get back under control. I icedand elevated , toes above nose, probably 6 hours a day. I had almost no pain. I'm now 4 weeks post op. Best wishes.
