Depression and pain

Ive been in pain for almost two years and my depression is worse because of the pain. But I am thinkiing maybe some antidepressants can help with pain.Ive been taking escitalopram (lexapro). But it doesn't help much.

Any ideas?

Good morning Kimberly. To start with you need to speak to your GP. Tell them the situation and don't mix tablets by yourself.

Hi Kimberley I don't think ad's would help with your physical pain but they might make you feel better and more able to cope with it.   Depression is very common in chronic illness or pain and you should find your doctor very sympathetic.

I wouldn't take anything which is not prescribed as this can have an adverse effect on your other meds.   Go and see the doctor and explain how you are feeling.   That's the best way.  x

There are some of the older antidepressants that might be able to help with pain, like Amitryptaline, however they aren't routinely used for depression anymore because they can have unpleasant side effects. I live in pain too (bad enough to require two different types of morphine) so I understand how you are feeling 100%.

Having a painkilling antidepressant may not be the way to go, because you can't keep upping the dose for better pain relief. Your best bet is to find an antidepressant that works, and a painkiller that works, seperately.

If the pain is severe, you can can ask for a referral to a pain management clinic. However your best option is to start with your doctor.

There are a lots of different painkillers on the market and what you will be given depends on what is causing the pain and the type of pain it is. Your doctor will be able to decide what type/s of pain relief is best for you.

go and see your GP and tell about your pain and see what he says
