i met a cbt therapist for counceling. I have been taking medicines for the last twenty years. Therepist said " u people taking bucket of medicines everyday" all wasted ur money and spoiled ur health, now u came cbt terapist. Is it his statement is correct? that means are phystry and medicines all r waste . can u share me his topic valid or not.
That is his view and opinion and i suppose he is entitled to that. What works for some people doesn't always work for others. I have suffered depression since my teens and i have had meds on and off since. I am currently taking Citalopram and find it takes the edge off my depression and anxiety. I have also had talking group therapies and one to one counselling and it helped me a great deal. I know what causes my depression which is mainly an abusive childhood and marriage and then the suicide of my husband. Life experiences which cannot be erased is the culprit for me. I have read on this forum that CBT doesn't always work for some people, again we are all different. I think your therapist is just expressing his opinion and just take it with a pinch of salt. As long as your happy to continue with him and it works for you that's all that's all that matters. He gets paid anyway weather it works for his patients or not.
In my humble opinion, the way you were spoken to is both disgusting and unprofessional! No, his statement is not correct, and if it were me, I would be reporting him to his boss for this.
That counsellor should never had said those things. I had one once who told me I used anti depressants as a crutch. of course I do. And it was a counsellor from doctor's surgery who prescribed the medication.
A counsellor should not air their views. They should listen to you and help. I would change therapists if I was you. He is definitely a really bad therapist. Don't take any notice. Of course it is not all a waste. We need support not someone airing silly views.
I agree with everything everyone else has said, this therapist behaved in a totally unprofessional way. It is not his job to air his views with you on other treatments you have had/are having. You got referred to him for CBT and basically that's all he should be doing; CBT. That's it.
He's not a doctor, and will not have the power to prescribe therefore his opinions on what you've been prescribed in the past are outside his realm of knowledge.
Can I just ask, is this person a CBT therapist or a CBT coach? As in my area they are two different things, the latter being the least qualified/experienced.
Ultimately it's up to you on how you want to take things from here.
You can accept that whilst the CBT specialist you saw has spoken out of turn, you'd like to go back and try and make some progress with him.
You can decide you'd like to try CBT with a different person.
Or you can decide that you don't want to do the CBT at all, I'm only saying this because personally it doesn't work for me. I tried it 3 times, got nowhere and on my 4th offer of CBT from my GP I just refused it as I think it's a waste of everyone's time.
Whatever you decide is up to you, but please please don't feel guilty or bad for taking medication you've been prescribed for your illness. The CBT therapist was very wrong to draw reference to that.
I would, whatever you decide to do, mention what he said to your GP next time you see them, because its likely if the CBT therapist has said this to you about medication, he's said it to others too. And those other people may not be able to cope with him saying that, they may go home and stop taking their meds, which could have negative consequences for them and their recovery.
Good luck to you and I hope you find the help you need xxx
