Dermoid Cyst

Hi all

I'm new to this but it's good to know there are so many people with similar experiences that can help!

I have been eventually diagnosed with an 8cm dermoid cyst.

I say eventually because it has taken 7 months to finally diagnose.

I have been tested for appendicitis, bowel problems, gall bladder trouble, kidney infections, stomach ulcers and I have undergone lots of unneccessary tests. Had i not persevered and asked for an MRI scan they probably would still be looking for it!!!

I am now on the waiting list for surgery and I have opted for an open procedure as they can save part of my ovary that way!

Has anyone had a similar experience?

How long have people waited for their op?

Hi

Welcome to the forum!

It's good that you have finally been diagnosed, it must have been a very stressful time for you.

I'm guessing that by \"open procedure\" you mean they will cut along your bikini line? I have had 4 of those ops, the last being in October 2008 where ther removed my last remaining ovary. The recovery time is longer than keyhole but sometimes this procedure is the best way to go if the surgeon feel that the op may be a bit \"fiddly\".

You won't be able to lift anything (even a kettle!) for a while and you must have complete rest during the first stages of your recovery. You'll be surprised just how much you use your stomach muscles, even for little things.

I have always been lucky enough to have private insurance so have never had to wait longer than 4 weeks from diagnosis to op. The quickest was 2 weeks! Others on here have not been so lucky but I think it may depend on where you live.

Hope all goes well and keep us informed of your progress.

Take care.

Jill

Hi Aud - I too have what they suspect to be a dermoid cyst.

Mine was actually discovered about 4 yrs ago, I had kidney stones when it was found on the CT scan, but I was told it was a simple cyst and best left alone!!

Last year however I began having symptoms - almost like my kidney stones coming back, so they arranged an US scan (May2008) and thats when they discovered it had grown a bit.

I was referred to a gyn for an internal US scan (Aug 08) and thats when it was mentioned I had a dermoid cyst - well they are 90% sure thats what it is, it may be a endometrial cyst.

I was refered to a surgeon (Set 08) who advised that they whip the wee blighter out - ovary and all.

My original date was Dec 08, but as we've had a cr@p year and our son is still young I asked to postpone it and was given a date for Jan 09 - the 19th with my op being 20th!! Thats next week!!! EEEEEKK

I'm utterly terrified but I can't put up with the discomfort and pain much longer.

The surgeon says he will attempt endo surgery, but having a bit of a tum makes it awkward.

I'm in Scotland by they way, and I'm having my op at the RAH in Paisley.

What are your symptoms? My cyst is on the left ovary and boy does it hurt my leg.

All the best

Janice
