Diagnosed with Diverticulitis

Several years ago I was diagnosed with this after severe abdominal pain that took me to the ER. They tried to do some type of scope with water and air up my rear end and I was in so much pain they couldn't finish it. They don't me I have pouches in my intestines that food gets stuck in and they can get infected. I've never had any scopes. I was sick for five days with horrible pain until the antibiotics kicked in. Over the years I have had several attacks come on but I don't have any bleeding and I haven't had any hospital stays. I usually just let the pain pass on it's own. I am going to the GI doc later this month and I'm sure he is going to do upper and lower scopes because now my GP thinks I have an ulcer and and acid reflux along with other things I've been having problems with. Since I was out on the acid reflux meds my poop is consistently almost a yellow color and almost always looks like greasy and I constantly worry. I also have started panicking lately and worry about everything. Anyone else do this?

Hey Kim, sounds like you have Diverticular (pouches in your colon) and when they get infected it turns into Diverticulitis.

I suffer with the same complaint and with me it has resulted in a couple of hospital stays and at one point a perforated colon. I've also had a couple of milder attacks that have been treated at home with a course of antibiotics. It's horrible and very painful and can be quite scary. The help you'll receive from the medical profession will be quite limited and essentially they will just ply you with drugs. You will need the antibiotics when you have an attack, in fact they are essential but the rest of the time they will only do you further harm. It's all about diet, you are what you eat. this is mostly a "western disease" and reflects our poor or miss managed diet. I would avoid foods that don't digest well, so red meat, wheat, gluten. I avoid all grains now and all meat and occasionally I'll eat wild fish. I also avoid most beans and pulses (there are a couple I can eat but only if properly prepared in a pressure cooker) The dairy I use is Goats or Sheep products and then only from grass fed animals not grain fed. I will eat eggs, but again only from pastured chickens not grain fed and I avoid nuts and seeds (these can get stuck in pouches) I would work on your probiotics as your's would have been severely damaged by the antibiotics.

I hope this helps a little, this is one instance when someone can honestly say "I know how you feel"

All the best

Ian

Thank you for replying. I avoid red meat and grain if I can and you're right food gets stuck in those pouches. I try to eat a little healthier than before and thank you so much.
