I have just been diagnosed with herpes and I'm completely SHOCKED. I've been with my partner now for over a year and was just wondering does this mean he has cheated on me....!!!!

that does not mean necessarily that he has cheated on you. there are 2 possibilities otherwise. either you had the virus inactive for a long period and its just been activated either your partner is an asymptomatic carrier and he does not even know it.. your partner should have a blood test as well!
How did you find out
He could have cheated, but he might not have. Your situation doesn't prove either case, I'm afraid. Herpes does not pass with each and every sexual contact, so he could have had it since before and you only acquired it now.
Also, if Type 1 (versus Type 2), that really means nothing much. Most people have it orally from childhood.
