My mom is 65 years old and she has multiple problems, she has cholestrol and high Blood pressure which is under control with medicines, she has a problem of Irrtable bowel syndrome, osteo arthiritis, and recently her health check up has revealed that she is having marginally high uric acid (6.2). She is now prescribed reduced non veg (fish and chicken) and no red meat. Can you please suggest a good weekly diet for her
It is a good idea to cut out simple carbs as much as possible, carbonated drinks, sweets, cakes and biscuits etc. They say you should eat a third of your diet as complex carbs, pasta, bread, potatoes etc, a third as fruit and veg, a sixth dairy and a sixth proteins meat, fish, eggs and beans. Is your mother suffering from gout with the high uric acid problem? As her doctor says cutting out red meats will help, also drinking a squeezed lime or lemon in water is supposed to help reduce it too. IBS improves with lifestyle changes such as diet, relaxing and cutting out stress. Also become aware of the foods that cause the problem and avoid them. High blood pressure and high cholesterol can also be improved with diet, oily fish such as salmon, mackerel or sardines, nuts such as brazil nuts and almonds. Also avocados are good. As we are all told exercise and a healthy weight can help us all.
Hello there. So lovely to see a caring daughter! I've read that ginger and garlic help lower cholesterol. Ginger also improves digestion and helps lower BP. Cumin is a good digestive especially to 'settle' a heavy meal. Coriander is good for indigestion and the seeds can reduce cholesterol. (I've even read that cardamom and cinnamon help fight diabetes).
I've seen loads of people in India live well into their 90s on a vegetarian diet, the main ingredients of which are spices like these. But please consult mum's GP/nutritionist first regarding adding these to her diet. Wishing mum the best of health.
Thanks for your reply. It was really very helpful
Thanks ptolemy. But my concern is the diet you have mentioned for lowering cholestrol increases uric acid like salmon, mackarel all are high in purine content. Though my mom is nit having gout problems yet, I need to know a balanced diet that would control her uric acid levels and chloestrol levels.
