Difference in opticians prescriptions

I went to one optician to get an eye test. My right eye was measured as: Sph: +2.25, Cyl: +0.25 Axis: 30. I went to another to get lenses and glasses. They entered my right eye on their system as: Sph: +2.5 Cyl: -, Axis: 120. When I queried this I was told it amounted to the same thing. Since I am not entirely happy with the result, the question is do these different sets of figures produce the same lens?

I used to mystery shop a lot of opticians and ended up with all sorts of different prescriptions.  One day, I decided to take them all to a completely different optician, where I was actually planning on buying my specs from and I asked the Optometrist to explain the differences, with the exception of one that had got my prescription completely wrong, they were basically the same but written in a different way.

Yes those are just two ways of writing the same thing. The first optician has written it in 'plus cyl' and the second uses 'minus cyl'. As far as i know, most opticians work in minus cyl but the lens labs use plus cyl, so they 'transpose' the prescription to the other format. It does get a bit confusing!

Hi

It is so confusing especially when you are already experiencing some anxiety about changes in your life!!

My specialist wrote my sight as 6/6 in both eyes and My optician told me I had 20/20 vision !! ....same thing!!!

My specialist told me I had early cateracts then wrote it down as Lenticular nuclear sclerosis .....so you can imagine how quickly my anxiety went through the roof when I opened the envelope and read the diagnosis....panic!!!

Some very kind lady on this site put my mind at rest.

aren't we so lucky to have found this site ?

Good luck with progress.

Best wishes
