Different leg lengths

Hi all, I'm 3.5 weeks post op and doing well.  I've started noticing swelling around right knee when I've been on my feet a while.  My new hip leg is now nearly an inch longer than the other one which is sometimes causing me to hold my leg out at a different angle when I'm walking.  I know this will be fixed when they do the other hip but I don't think that will be for about a year.  Has anyone come across this?  Are there any guidelines on how to walk well with different leg  lengths?

Thats almost exactly what i said 7 weeks ago. i have no advice besides use a stick.crutch to help keep you level and get a referral to orthotics to get your other shoe built up so that when you are walking any distance you will be level. Im 8 weeks post op and am suffering with my right knee and left hip so it wont be long before the other needs doing. There is also a product called 'Evenup' which cost me about 25 pounds and attaches to the bottom of my shoe. its not perfect but it does help

Thanks Helen, I thought I might be able to avoid developing additional problems if I could work on exercises to avoid an uneven pelvis.  I will see what the Evenup looks like and might try it.

If you search through the threads on this HR Forum, you will find dozens, if not hundreds, of conversations about uneven leg lengths.

Oh, sorry Elaine.  I'm new on here.  Should have searched first.

No problem Laura. Same happened to me.

Just thought you'd find loads to be going on with, while you're waiting for responses.

As always, there will be a huge diversity of advice and information. I sift through it and find that I'm drawn to what sounds right for me, and my body, by instinct.

Do keep posting and let us know how you get on. They're a great group of people, who'll be only too happy to help.

Good luck.

I have the same problem - find the stick really does help, but counting the days to the second op. Can see that leg with new hip is straight but other one is bent out due to the distortion on the hip.not sure if trying to increase shoe height would really help because of the twist.

Hi Laura

i had different leg lengths before I had my right hip done. I asked my consultant if he could even me up. He said he could.

I realised that I had been standing on my good leg all the time and hardly used my bad one to stand on. Post op consultant said he had made legs level.

I disagree with him. Doing my exercises it was obvious my bad leg was longer. I have to wear a shoe on my good side to be High enough to execute them. Even the Physio laid me down and came to the same conclusion my bad leg is longer. I don't mind that it is longer I just want to know what to do for the best. I don't want to jeopardise either hip by exercising incorrectly I just want the best advice as to how to proceed from here. I am 12 weeks post op. I use one stick except in the kitchen where I hold onto the work tops , cursing when I need to get to the fridge (no work tops)  and the stick is over the other side!  You know what I mean. 😂😂😂

i get lunch and cook dinner every day,  I live on a farm so I take the dog for a walk sort of round the field. I use two sticks because it's a bit rough terrain I take it slow. I seem to ache more sitting which is a shame as I enjoyed watching Murray win but just couldn't sit still!

i shall play a silly game on my iPad and try and make myself really tired and hope I get another four hours.

Well hippies I know we are all out here all at different stages but it's still nice to know someone out there knows exactly how you feel.

May you all be comfortable
