Also, how do I create a direct link to this page, please? Thanks.
I was on citalopram for a while but felt so unwell on it that I gradually eased myself off. I had awful stomach issues - indigestion, tummy 'grumbling', and like others a mixture of constipation at times and then mild diaorrhea at others. Every time I ate anything I felt really nauseous - most unusual for me as normally I have a good digestive system and eat well. Also got horrible horrible headaches. I'm still very 'up and down' and have anxiety, is there an alternative to the prozac type medications? I dont want to take them again as I felt so bad.
Hi all!
I am gonna ad my little story here with Citalopham.
(for full disclosure....the only other pill in this cathegory that I ever took was Cipralex more that 5 years ago for 1 year.... but it had 6 month brains freeze withdrawal effact after I stopped it, so I am probably very sensitive)
So I went to a doctor and we talked about sleep and anxiety.
She gave me a sample tablets. 30mg pills. I took 1 (as in one) here is what happened.
Psychologically it took me to despair never felt before. No worry about suiside as I could not get up
So physically, I could not get up to pee or drink water for 24hrs. Next 24 hours thats all I was capable of doing. Third day, feeling better I felt like eating a bit a 1/2 can of soup sent me back to bed. It was a week I was able to eat more that a few bites. To this she wrote down "medication didn't agree with patient".
Weeks later whe I was complaining of discomfort and pain, she sent me for acid test. Negative. Atmost I had irritation in my esophagus, don't think it's heartburn, but anyway.
I have been surviving the last 9 months by eating little, not eating when the stomach doesn't seem to be ready for food. Not working so I am able to lie down if I don't feel well. Tried changing the diet, no help.
That doctor disappeared a while ago, so I saw a new doctor a few weeks ago and he doens't even believe me that this happened, and that was the cause of this condition. So sent me for blood test...all fine...another acid test...negative.
Waiting on Lactose test results.
I think the medication changed my stomach (or duodenum seem to have a lot to do with how SSRIs work) maybe permanenty. GPs just can't even imagine what to do with this. Blood test fine...you don't have major desease...your stomach is working....end of story. This is where heathcare in Canada got to.
Hi bill how have you got on with your symptoms
Hello there. I am only on day 4 of taking citalopram and the last 2 days the acid reflux is AWFUL. I already have been diagnosed with Acid reflux years ago but never this bad. My stomach is so bloated, gas passing out of my butt and the acid builds in my throat and literally makes me cough. I am only on day 4 and everyone keeps saying it will get better. I have NEVER been on anything before but my anxiety was taking over my life. God I hope this goes away.
Citalopram
Terry,
Not sure if you are still following this post as I see it was a year ago.
Sounds like I am in the same place now that you were then with the Cit.
Bloating, gas, I have GERD which is horrible and cough from the gerd and waking nights. I was thinking of weaning off Cit and wondering how you did with that>? Did your digestive issues clear up after you quit Cit? Thanks, Robin
Paul,
I have been on CIt for a year now and in the last cpl months I have developed GERD and vicious cough and waking nights. I did not link the Cit to the GERD but I saw a post that made the light buld come on. I am nervous to stop the Cit but really dislinking the GERD thing!! Have you found a happy medium?
Hi Robin. I was put on citalopram earlier this year. 20mg. After around 6 weeks I started to experience acid and bloating and feeling nauseous I told the doctor I wasn't going to take any more as the very thought of taking citalopram made me queasy.
Since then my acid reflux hasn't improved. I'm due an endoscopy on Monday to see what's going on but I am wondering if citalopram has caused my gastric problems.
I haven't used citalopram since end of May 2016.
Did you read my story on the bottom? Took me two yeara to get over that and still have to be careful and not eat suddenly. But at least I can fill my stomach now. Good luck with the endoscopy.
I know it's been a year but are you still on the celexa. Looking for some support as I started on 2.5 as well and am now up to 5mg
I took citalopram two years ago for post traumatic stress and was on them for 9 months. Never had digestive issues before or acid reflux. When I was prescribed them I was given omeprazole as well. While taking them I developed weight gain and bloated stomach and never felt hungry.
Mentally I was numb inability to feel normal emotions or empathy for anyone.
I came off them independently, cold turkey didn't have to bad of reaction.
What I have experienced from beginning is excessive bloating starting from minute I eat anything and abdomen pain. This gradually has gotten worse I developed ibs symptoms with sluggish bowel.
Also have server gerd, dyspepsia loud bowel sounds at night.
Constipation, diarrhoea or inability to empty my bowel properly.
I know using this antidepressants has created some of these issues as all develop after taking them and some is related to my lifestyle but I would ask people to be weary of this medication
Hi
I have been on citaopram for years and have started getting digestive went to see my gp and she told me tests with been done but if it comes bk to the tablets i must come off them
i get a pain in the start of my tummy and burning feeling and i also reflex
Stomach feels on fire after sleep .From flat stomach to looking pregnant ! Jaw feels as if it's going to become locked !! ( reading other people's symptoms when on citalopram have made me realise it's the tablet )!!! Will not be taking it any longer .
Hi, I am the same. I was on it for about 4 months but the severe bloating I experienced was so extreme along with nasea, I got off of them and my stomach is still very bloated when eating certain foods . But I already knew I had stomach problems especially with wheat. Mine just seems worse now. I also don't have a gall baldder. It got removed 15 years ago. Celexa made me feel wonderful but with my stomach problems made worse along with my sex drive disappearing, I said no thanks.
I have been using 40mg of citalopram a day for about 4 years now and I never associated any of these symptoms with the meds.... until now. I too have always been very skinny regardless of how much I ate, I still am skinny u understand but my stomach has changed so dam much, I have gained 3 stone and it’s all in my stomach area. I too get unbelievable heartburn/indigestion every day and am also prescribed lansoprazole. I have severe anxiety which makes it a struggle to go any distance from home, if I panic then the flight response is automatically triggered and within a minute I need to get to a loo.... now! I too have noticed the confidence destroying problems with the bowel movements, horrible and soft/sticky, feeling like ur never really finished etc. etc. Until, I ran out of meds just before Christmas but I was sure I had some extras and didn’t think I needed any more, but, I couldn’t find them and so I had to go cold turkey from them until after the new year which the doctor explains how dangerous that can be and should be avoided. I have noticed days of the feeling of pure rage, anything no matter how small or insignificant can make me blow up, but, I have noticed the bloated feeling has bee gradually reducing, going to the loo feels a lot better, much easier too. I just picked up a new lot of meds today and seriously rethinking taking them and waiting another couple weeks too see what happens. May even be a good idea to go back to beta blockers to slow my heart down and try to contain the panic attacks. I think I have covered everything I wanted to say here, if not then more will follow.
