Hello fellow hippies
After following various discussions on the forum I decided I would apply for a disabled badge and see how I got on, even though most said it was a non starter.
I did it online and provided them with all the info regarding my condition, that being advanced arthritis in both hips, have first hip booked in for 28th April and then the other to be done fairly soon after.
I commented that my main concern was actually the difficulty I am experiencing when getting in and out of a car when another car parks right next to me.
I submitted my application and sent off a cheque for £10. I live in Cornwall.
Well, less than a week later I have received my disabled parking badge, I was shocked but extremely relieved. It just shows it's always worth trying, if you don't ask, you don't get!
Feeling much more confident about going out now and a lot less worried about those weeks after the op!

Well done. You will be able to park much closer to entrances now and as the parking spaces are much wider, you won't have to worry about anyone parking nxt to you. Good luck with the op.

I just tried on line but my council said I do not have the right criteria .

I also tried to get a badge,on line ,with my local council ,I live in Devon U.K. .
no luck , even thou iv had both hip replaced and had my pelvic fracture during my left hip operation ,my pelvic has been plated and screwed , I was not able to weight bear for 3months , but still no luck , I two have difficulty getting in and out the car , last week while parking in Plymouth I could not get in my car as someone parked so close , I had to wait for someone to come along to move my car out , I felt such a fool , also it dose nothing for ones confident . Well done on getting your badge. I have had one for 23 years and last year when I reapplied there were many more questions, so I think they have made it harder to get one. The crucial element is having medical proof from doctors that you have difficulties walking far. Also like ESA questions have to be answered a certain way. Sadly the government have made people jump through hoops to get entitlement to financial help. This at a time when people are going through personal challenges with their health. On the negative side of having a badge there seem to be more people with them and less spaces. Also some selfish people without a badge take liberties and park in the spaces. Yes it's not only needing to park near to places but being able to open the doors wide to get in safely and out.
They have tightened up because so many people have a used the system over the years . I know quite a few people who have had them for hip replacement years ago and still have them when they no longer really need them .
i had a great deal of trouble getting one for my 94 year old dad .
Unfortunately for me I have had pain on walking since car accident . I had my THR due to post traumatic arthritis from original hip socket fracture. This has not reduced pain for me as some originated from scar tissue and nerve damage. Actually I wish I had not had replacement as I am in more pain and walking less because my femoral nerve was damaged during the op. Having said that I have since discovered that I could have damaged femoral nerve with original reconstruction, so at least I never suffered with that extra complication for 23 years.

Quite right too. There are usually far too many empty disabled spaces around where I live. They should be issued automatically to hippies. Maybe note from doctors would help. I'll certainlyinvestigate when my time comes (again) but looks like postcode lottery again. Maybe helps if there's a council worker n the dept who's been there!
