disappointed with the bend!

Just received my shiny new goniometer from Amazon, and measured the bend which I had thought was around 120 . . in fact it's only just over 100 frown

so I'll have to be a bit pushier with my knee for the next few weeks. Disappointed!

chin up sure you will get there ,how does the goniometer work? do i need one? my op is on monday shall I add one to my "knee kit"? sounds intriguing!

Send it back and tell them to replace it with one that isn't broken. Keep pushing.....now that you have visual motivation you'll get there.

They aren't vital to your recovery, you can tell how muchbend you have yourself.  Numbers don't really matter in my opinion.

I'm 9 wks now and didn't even have it measured when I saw the consultant he just said I can see it's at least 90°...went to first physio monday and she got the measuring thingy out and said oh its 115° which is good and not to expect much more than another 10°...not sure what we are supposed to expect as an end result...but I still can't sit up on the sofa with both knees bent I wonder of I ever will again lol

Right, I shouldn't have mentioned  Amazon which is why my original post was moderated!  Not really necessary to have a goniometer, but I just like silly things . .it was only 6.50 plus postage!  It is two pieces of transparent plastic, like a ruler, with a circular piece at the junction . . you place one piece along the thigh, and the other down the calf, and in the circular piece you get the reading in degrees . . .difficult to be absolutely certain you've got it right . . .

OH and good luck for next Monday!  Hope it all goes according to plan. '

Hah!  Yes, I think it has given me more motivation!  It's definitely improved over the last week, so I'm going to keep hard at it!  Hope you are doing well . . Your trips to the hospital for the antibiotic infusions are going to be a nuisance. . is it far?  Hope not!

I can sit quite comfortably  on the sofa with both knees bent . . I think they kept on so much about that in the hsopital that I've been very careful not to let the operated leg stick out in front . .  . .and I really thought that it must be at about 120 . . Extension is better than I thought, though, at about 5 . . .

try not to stress too much 90 seems to be the magic number so anything above is a bonus. Don't be too hard on yourself ... just keep doing the exercises and the bend in get better. 😀

Totally agree. . not a necessary little gadget, but quite interesting!  I have enough bend to go up and down stairs, can actually kneel although I;ve only tried it on my very soft mattress . . and don't intend to be scrubbing any floors anyway! and I think really I can do whatever I want to do with the bend Ive got. . .but I'll push for a bit more.  And I really want to get it straight, which I feel is more important . . . .

Adjust goniometer for elevation and sea air.

How did you know we lived 500 metres from the sea, up a hill which is almost vertical!!!

True!  It becomes a bit of an obsession though!

Physio lady decided to do what I can only describe as a CPR motion above my knee...she said this will get it straight haha

100 is still pretty good.

My physiotherapist did not always tell me what the measurement was, she just used to say more, more.!

You had mentioned Tenerife and being on the higher part of the Island.  I had to Google it of course.  I have only X amount of time to know everything... ha ha

I'm still in a rehab facility trying to buil strength for the next go round when they put in the new prosthesis. Its a nice 34 bed private room, one level place with both occupational and physical therapy gyms. I have decided to do the infusions at home instead of going to the outpatient when I leave here

I found it difficult to measure on my own and now take a side digital picture of the bend and measure it with a goniometer on the the computer screen. You can also compare weekly pictures to visably see improvements which makes you happy lol.

Regards Paul

I never had a problem with straightening, surgeon told me he gave me a completely straight leg now as I walked on bent one for years.  He spent a lot of time going this and I was in theatre for longer than usual.  As for bend, I thought you had a window of three months and then it won't bend snynp more.  Speaking to physio yesterday and this is not true.  Bend can be increasing all the time and she told me to not worry about it.   She knew someone three years down the line that still increased the bend in their knee.  This is promising!
