hoping some of you might be able to help, I'm 18 weeks post op THR and went to my daughters graduation last week and wore very small heels! I did check with my surgeon who said it was ok to do so if I felt I could, I walked for much further than I should have and got quite a burning pain in my backside, since then I am now back to one crutch as I'm limping quite badly without it, I have outer thigh pain and a bit of swelling midway down the thigh, I'm back to see my surgeon in 2 weeks praying it's only muscle/ tendon / ligament damage, I feel incredibly mad and upset with myself but I've been back at work for 5 weeks with no stick, I would appreciate your thoughts thank you xx
TO me it just sounds like you walked too much, pushed yourself and now paying.
My friend who had a posterior 4 yrs ago walks a lot and now walks less as when she goes further she's in back pain etc.....then has to lay low.
Best to do small things ... you are really still fresh from the surgery.
I deal with back OA and Fibro and a messy hip replacement, so I know I cannot push myself or I'm a mess.....
I wouldn't think warring little heals would cause that much damage.. hopefully you used ć cold pack's to reduce swelling and inflammation.
Maybe you can call the doctors office to see if you can get in sooner.
Maybe it cause a little slippage from joint. But rest it and use the cold pack's until swelling goes down
So sorry that happened to you
I do hope you haven't done any damage. The only thing you can pray for is muscular strain as you certainly don't want either tendon or ligament damage which is probably unlikely. If you were wearing heels, however small and walking on them for too long I suspect muscular probs which will resolve if you go back to doing a lot less for a week or two and icing the painful part of your leg. You could always see your GP in the interim if you're really worried as an emergency xray/scan could be done before you see your surgeon and perhaps put your mind at rest. Good luck!
Hi Jackie, I think your doing ok maybe just over did it little , I would say if you been back to work you are doing great . My thr was 11 months ago I cannot work I cant wear heels at all i live in workout shoes and flip flops Im still in physical therapy 3x day . I wish i could go back to work my job is standing most of my day bending pushing etc, I really miss working . Im sure everything will be check out ok hang in there Let me know how your appt go's
Take Care
Jackie
Even though the heels were low, you were probably unconsciously tightening up those newly strengthened muscles whilst you were doing all of that walking. That could well have affected your posture too as the pain in the buttocks sounds more as if it comes from the spine than the hip. I would suggest that the pain on the outside of your thigh is to do with repairing nerves and muscles around your scar which have also been jolted. You are right to go back to using the stick as this is taking the pressure off those poor muscles. Remember it can take 9 - 12 months at least for everything to heal! Rest, ice and more limited movement appears to be the recommendation from fellow THR members. Hope you're feeling more comfortable soon!!
Hi, I'm from California--I'm guessing you are in the UK. Sounds like your T-band
muscle that runs on the outside of the thigh. A massage therapist may be able to
help you. I have regular massage and even though there is some discomfort
for a couple of days after (because the muscles are being moved around) I feel
its is worthwhile and helps. FYI, my THR was done in July and was done posteriorly
with robotic assistance. Hang in there. Let us know what your surgeon has to say.
Virginia, Santa Monica here.....I ended up with the IT band damage and didn't know for a long time what was going on there.....I had a chiro who is trained in ART (Active Release Technique) do 8 deep sessions on that IT band area and it helped loosen it some, but it's still there and when Ibuprofen or Pain RX wears off, I get burning/tingling again.... This is with the Femoral Nerve Damage I deal with too, Anterior replacement....
How goes your robotic posterior? What is the benefit of robotic assistance?
I think you said you are in Chula Vista, do I have a good memory or was that someone else?
Just dragged myself in from the market, I worry when I get much older, how I will do my shopping....try not to go there but after a life of doing everything for myself....it's come to this.
Hi Jackie
It sounds like you have overdone things
Rest and it will probably clear up soon
Sorry I'mhaving prbs with the site today which iswhy this is short
Eileen
Thank you everyone, it always makes me feel better coming on here and having interaction with fellow hippies! Have followed your advice about ice packs and I'm still elevating and resting as much as possible, will let you know what the outcome is when I see my surgeon and physio, take good care of yourselves xxxx
Eileen, for the past two days, without any changes to my computer on my behalf, I've stopped getting notifications from this site...has this ever happened to you or anyone out there?
Hi
No not had that problem.....what happens every now and then is it skips letters and when I look at it ....its complete rubbish....more so than usual
It was like that for about 2 days but now its back to normal ....whatever that is LOL
Love
Eileen
It may not be any damage Jackie, it very well could be swelling. I too tried to wear a 1 1/2 heel when I was about the same 18 weeks out from my second one, and it was a horrible mistake and one that I plan to never repeat. Fortunately, there is a large market for cute flats.
Hope it becomes better for you. Often times with my 2 THR's, I have overdone myself with walking and not in heels and felt as though I have hurt myself and the pain increases, but I awaken the next day and feel stronger and have a longer period of pain just after awakening and walking to the bathroom and to the kitchen. So perhaps all that walking will produce more strength and movement than you expected.
For me, it seems when I become starteled and jump/jerk, or nearly trip and feel as though I have pulled severely on something in there when I corrected myself to avoid the near fall, that I also feel better the next day. Who knows right?
Wish the best for you!
Dawn
Above I meant to say that I experience a longer period of no pain at all the next morning after what I thought was a disasterous over do the day before.
