I'm 5 weeks post op after double hip replacement but I find sitting upright for a while results in stiffness & pain. I have to walk it off with a severe limp. Is this common or normal & if so, how long before l can sit straight up without the pain that follows?
Hi Tyco,
sorry to hear of your plight, when you say upright do you mean in a hard back kitchen type chair? if so maybe you should alternate between a hard and soft chair, you normal chair in the loung will be fine as long as you use cushions to get the right height, failing this an air pillow may help, both hips at once you are very brave, hope you get better soon,
Lynne
Perhaps some gentle stretching exercises?
Hi Edarlingb
I do stretches & exercises at home. My range of mobility has increased immensely in 5 weeks. The sitting upright is when l go out for dinner or visit friends, resulting in the discomfort.
That walk out of the restaurant is what l dread.
Maybe l'm rushing my recovery based on my progress thus far.
Let me give more time
Thanx Lynne.
I had them done one week apart.
I am happy with my recovery thus far. I don't use crutches anymore & my limp is minimal. Totally off pain meds too. I exercise regularly and walk a trail twice a day.
That said, I will be going out more & try to resume a normal existence...just gotta avoid those straight back chairs for now lol.
Good morning Tyco ... amazing job you have done so far - you seem to have a handle on your self and know your limitations ... restaurant chairs are usually low and not the most comfortable to sit on for long - it may sound silly but how about taking a cushion with you the next time you go out?? and take a cane with you too ... who cares what other people think ...
take care and have a winderful day ...

Hi Tyco , I too had a double hip replacement done three and a half months ago and I remember feeling very sore after sitting upright for a while . Walking it off seems to be the only thing for it but it does stop if I recall about 8 ish weeks or so . You are still early days so stick with it and it will ease . I feel pretty good by now and can do most things quite normally but still hav to be a bit carefull . I am planing a 475 mile drive in three weeks and feel I will be fine . Just have to stop more often . I had my hips done same day and so glad now as would now be thinking of getting it done again , keep up your good work but do rest when needed , dont push it too hard , kind regards , Ruth
