i have pouches all over my bowel and have suffered one very uncomfortable bout of diverticulitis with fever and slow moving bowel. My pain is in the low right side. since then I have had discomfort every 5 months or so. No fever but pain on right side and times when it feels like a baby kicking under my ribs. When this happens I can feel hard lumps just under the skin. Treatment is metronidazole which works. I then get a few weeks relatively pain free and the it starts all over again. Up until now I have been taking VSL3 which was recommended by a consultant for IBS. Now thinking of trying Symprove. Any advice or suggestions would be good.
Try a warming heating pad on the area. Stay on easy to digest soft foods for a few days. I also take Bentyl for cramping. Hope this helps.
Update. Saw consultant who specialises in bowel issues and he says I am not suffering from diverticulitis. Yes I do have diverticular disease but so do many people. He thinks IBS and chronic pain syndrome left over from previous problems. Says bowel is over sensitive. I felt he really listened and understood issues and had heard them before. Nothing I said surprised him when I described how I felt and what I had to do. I have started symprove but still a little uncomfortable with it. Hopefully this will pass. Pain in side has subsided slightly. Have further medication to take but hoping not to as it will make me sleepy. Appointments for physio, dietician and colonography all happening. Wow
I think that is great news. I think the colonoscopy will help ease your mind.
What is it that he prescribed for you. I never heard of it.
God Bless!
Symprove is a liquid probiotic and you take a 12 week course to reset your insides. I was already taking vsl3, another probiotic, when I had most recent flare up so looked for something new. Also prescribed amitriptyline but reluctant to try. Although it is an anti depressant there has been a lot of research into its use for pain. I have been given it a few tpyears ago and it worked but I could fall asleep mid conversation!
Thank you. I too took a probiotic when I felt an attack was coming. It did help and also took an antispasmodic Bentyl for cramping. They both help ward off my flare up. Also a warm heating pad.
