DIVI DINERS

Returning from a hospital session of Drips and Deprevation (food) I was handed a Low Residue diet to follow. Scant in products, and information what to do with said products, I searced the web for more information,

onlt to find contradictory eat's and don't eats, so I thought that WE the

sufferers of food deprevation should start our own Divi Diners club and see if we can throw some light on the subject.

Ilove mushrooms, but cannot find any info about them.

How do we achieve our five a day if we can't eat fruit? Is it O.K. to take the

skins off?

Can we have chips or roasties,or fish with batter on?

Spices, do any of you use spices. and what do you put on spaghetti?

Can we blitz veggies, as stews and casseroles are forbidden?

Pastry is allowed, but no mentoin of which type.

So. can we help each other ,then at least when ,or if we ,dine out, we can

order something from the menu.

I cannot eat boiled potatoes ,eggs (is it O.K to have a fried one?)

jelly and rice pudding for ever. .

So please join in and share your doe's and dont's. mushrooms eaters

would be good to hear from.

Hi Jacqui

What a good idea!

Here's what I have found to be good over the past 12 years or so (together with my dietician).

Pastry fine - all types

Stews and Casseroles - both O.K. (but either omit or limit the onion). My wife thickens the stock and this just makes it so much better to eat.

Chips, roasties (but not huge piles) are O.K.

Fish, with or without batter is O.K. But....

Try fish cooked in a bag in the oven, it's delicious and so digestible.  Wallmark do super fish and a  huge variety at very competitive prices. They will seal in bags with a butter of your choice!

Pears, bananas, tinned passion fruit.  Try making a fruit salad (no need to peel (banana, yes, of course). Make the liqour with brandy (good for digestion)/little water and muscavado sugar.  Eat with Greek natural yoghurt.

Have a teaspoonful of 'set' Manuka Honey (10+) first thing in morning and drink water (tap) during day.

I find 'strong' vegetables (calabrase etc) difficult and 'farty'.  I avoid it.

Blitz veggies but try and avoid onions.

Acidy foods should always be avoided at all costs.

Mushrooms are OK.  My dietician condones their use.

Interesingly, she also tells me to have a couple of digestive or oatmeal biscuits mid-morning with my coffee. I am not a coffee drinker but I do have them with green tea (which is also good for digestion).

If I have Italian, I have loads of Parmesan and shredded Parma ham (taught from living in Italy).

I hope your forum works and I shall be keeping an eye out for good advice from others.

best wishes.  Jon

Hi both, great idea, but why avoid onions?

Also why not start a Facebook page with this on like the one for Bile Salt Malabsorption.

I also would not eat a lot of bread as this causes me awful wind. Gluten free is also a good way to go. My poor colon after the sushi I ate yesterday.....

what a relief, someone bothered to reply. Many thanks to you, and obviously your dietician. I'm really happy about the mushrooms shady

area you didn'n say anything about frying ?

I wonder what the no-no is on onions.?

Are curries out, and herbs in general are not to be eaten.

Fortunately my preference on the protein front is fish.

glad to hear about the stews.

Thank you.

Funny you should mention Manuka honey , I do, or rather

did, take it just for it "being good for me" but will start again.

After the humugeous pain I endured with my first flare, I was

quite afraid to eat anything, after reading the Residue diet.

I'm looking forward to breakfast.

Jacqui

Hello. thanks for your comments. Was the sushi a one off .or was the

fish off'?

Bread is a problem, though I  do enjoy a bacon "butty" but have not yet

found out if bacon is acceptable.

Can't do Facebook,

Jacqui

Hi,

just come out of hospital and really struggling to eat again.

So I would be interested to see what helps others, when I asked in the hospital

for advice all they did was print off a page from Boots web site that gave me very bad advice I feel for me.

Lynne x

Hi Lynne, hope the letter from Jon will help, it has cerainly given me more confidence about eating "proper "food. It seems  to be an area of no interest to  Divi staff .  An offer to see a dietician would probably be helpful, as an out patient . So I supose the next best thing would be your, G.P.

However , Ithink that if more "divi" sufferers join in ,we willbe able to take of each other.

Hope this helps, and hope you are painfree.

Jacqui

Hi Jacqi,

Yes Jon's list will be helpful, I am waiting to

Go back in to hospital for further tests as the ct

Scan suggests I now have problems both sides

now, although my GP said it couldn't happen!

Thanks for the post as information like this

Is really helpful when you don't know where to turn.

Lynne.

Hi Jacqui

Look what you started .. and I am delighted.

There isn't any real no-no on onions.  Onions (raw/pickled) are hard to digest.  Fried off first for stews and savoury rice etc., is fine.

Frying, generally is acceptable and don't give up your bacon butty.  However,we hae recently been told to reduce the amount of bacon we eat for general health reasons (not specifically for D sufferers).

Lets hope this bcomes the best and most informative forum.. and all thanks to you.

Curry's are OK with me - but I reduce the 'heat' with a lot of banana, desiccated coconut and mago.

Generally (and I forgot to mention) Spices, herbs are OK, bur use Cayenne sparingly.

Iv'e just discovered that Aldi sell a loaf which is called a malted bloomer.  It's the best nd most 'accommodating' bread I have ever had.  It's incredibly cheap at 95p for a full size loaf.  It mustbe good. We have no Aldi stores nearby and I travel 60 miles return journey to buy  a batch in Bournemouth (we have a bus pass!).

Do keep this running, Jacqui.  The med. profession just aren't interested. Comments like (when telling a new GP that one ins a sufferer) has  promted flippant remarks like 'yes, you and millions of others'  It's a horrible, debilitating disease always and flare-ups unbearable.  Drugs (Buscopan, Meberverine) are generally ineffective.  I don't ask for sympathy but niether do I accept dismissal.

best wishes.  Jon

Keep with us Lynne, it will make you feel happier knowing that someone cares about you Good luck with your scan ,just lie back and think about food.

Jacqui

John, I am glad you pointed out the attitude of the medical profession. I was offered antidepressants and when I refused my doc's attitude change completely towards me.Thanks for the info about the bread I will definitely look this up.

Good morning , Jonn again, I have replied to this mail, but I think it got shunted to the Diverticula  forum Hope you find it.

Something else that seems to run my life .this laptop!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Emis Moderator comment: the reply from Jacqueline was posted as a new discussion so I have copied it below and deleted the other new discussion.

Good morning Jon ,

what a surprise, nice one. It occurred to me as I was closing down, that you are a 12yr seasoned campaigner and I have had it for three years, during which time it has given me the occassional gentle-ish thwack. you are right on the ball with G.P's attitude, I was told I had "divi", and that everyne had it, end of conversation, and sent home

You mentioned coconut which is a no-no on the DIET sheet. It also states ,No herbs with stalks and leaves. This one is a rel tease, as I used to grow over 60 varieties of them. Anyone know of a bald, legless herb.Seemingly food is of paramount importance to keeping this yard of inner tube happy, have to say that I have just discovered Warburtons thins, which have not caused any eruptions. Let's hope this is great help to evryone ,so be prepared to air your "cook book"

wow factor in order

Jacqui

I know, I'm back again, but were you ever given reasons for omitting certain foods? What a lovely way to spend the day  Heaven forbid that they have not sold out of product whe yoe get there.

I would love slice of toast, but the crunchy of it is hoding me back, plus marmalade with bits in it is de-listed.It's REALLY good news about the bacon butty.

Jacqui

I have found that if I have a current flare, my diet changes considerably.  Rice puffs for breakfast, plain chicken, etc.  However, there are ways to cook some of the items mentioned which I have found suitable. I bake mushrooms in the oven. Peeled or not is up to you. Tomatoes the same when they are on the menu (avoid like the plague when suffering).  Have you tried turkey bacon?  I microwave that and normal bacon too, but make sure you lay a piece of kitchen towel over it as it will spit.  Only needs a minute or two depending on the thickness of the slices.  I like peaches/nectarines which are easy to eat and to peel.  I gave up on the idea of grapes though!  Don't be too quick to dismiss the Diverticular Disease site; there's lots of info there for you.  Good health to you all.

Hello Juliet, glad you have joined  It shows how many contradictory  can and can't have  items are treated The" menu " says no tomatoes at all, skins and seeds, but it says nothing about puree It says yes to rice, but a curry with rice pudding consistency  rice sounds un appealing. Do you know the items that causes a flare,or are you unaware of what starts each one ? I have to say that I do NOT want that intense pain ever again, that is Why I am digesting all the info about food. I feel as though I am developing a obsessive

compulsive food disorder GOOD

Any ideas on herbs yet???

Jacqui

Need to ask about flavoured bottle water.Still, or sparkling,? can't drink tap water and wondered if the acid content, would cause any problems as I am told to avoid acidic products I appear to be replying to myself, , whatever!!!!!!!!!!

Jacqui

Why can't you drink tap water?  Don't know about flavoured drinks but do avoid them if you think they are acidic.

There's an American Professor who has written a paper on D. He KNOWS that the sole primary cause is due to acid foods.  Can't remember his name but you will be able to Google it.  I eat Coriander, Basil, Marjoram, Oregano and other herbs (which I grow) and other Swartzkopf dried variety with no ill effects.

What were you going to tell me that was barred by the.. moderator?

What a hoot - we all answer ourselves.  It's reassuring.  Jon

Hiya Jacqui

Me again!   I telephone beforehand and ask them to keep some aside for me - thus saving a wasted journey.  The only things that I have evr been told is (a) surgery is not performed anymore because the Sigmoid simply stretches a regrows pockets (b) you must learn to live with it - we won't be recalling you (c) the dietician was really quite reassuring. She said that my diet was good (eat a digestive or oatcake mid-morning) but do avoid acidy fruit/foods.

I had a very bad 'turn' last week.  I'd just come back from Antigua and, of course, my GP 'blamed' foreign food which, of course, it wasn't.  In the past when the diverticuli have been infected, I have had anti-biotics (not intraveniously). Not this time though.  You will know from the news that the use of antibiotics are the biggest medical threat to our future. Chief Medical Officer today.

Hasn't the response been good?  You must be very pleased. Jon

It really works for me.. and so cheap.  Warburtons (now £1.45) eat your heart out!  Hope you manage to get some and that it good for you also.

I will not be dismissed by a GP.  I was a professional career civil servant in the Diplomatic Service.  I have eaten people like that for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

It's a horrible, debilitating, limiting, inhibiting disease and they mut be made aware of our problems. How easy to suggest anti depressants. The very work suggests dismissal.  Good luck. Jon

Hello Jon, did you find my stray mail? Your bad "do"  I find scary, there are obviously other trigger points, that sets it off Stress is something that keeps being blamed  I certainly get a shed load of that., pity there isn't a stress alarm bell. that gives a warning I was told to eat Rich tea, or shortbread, but not Digestives.I avoid anti-biotics like the plague as my doc knows, but when they are being pumped in for days on end ,the options are zero. Good job you didn't start you bad do in Antigua, once got as far as customs when a flight to Barbados landed to pick up,and passengers were allowed off the plane. .Iam going to "divert"now pardon the pun, but i would like to move from the entrance to the exit I have been invited to have a colonoscopy,  I should have it tomorrow, but the doctor thought It would be too sore ,so it has been postponed for a month which has moved my wuss  status up BIG time. I have been told that sedation is on offer, or gas and air, or nothing at all., AS if !!!!! I really need a lot of guidance on which avenue to take Hope you have been there, , and tellme ,worst option first, and if indeed it is hardly noticable until the camera gets to the corners.  Hand holding necessary .but I will settle for truth.Had a Warburtons thin with a slice if Italian ham, and a very tasteless Greek yoghurt Hope you are feeling no pain.

Jacqui
