DIY Hip Kit

Has anybody come up with some ingenious items, other than the ones you buy, to help you out at home?  I can't feed the dogs because I can't bend over to reach their bowls. I'm thinking if I used duct tape and taped a measuring cup to a long dowel, it would be long enough to be able to refill their bowls. Just wondering if anybody else has some creative ideas they'd like to share for stuff they "created" that was useful during their recovery.

11 days post op and doing well, but I forgot to pack my patience for this trip. 😩 Staples coming out this Tuesday. Can't wait!

Hope everyone has a great day!!

You can get 'pet feeding bowls on sticks', but I was able to use my grabber.

See my website for tips like this from hippies on this forum, the address is in my personal info here ...

Hi Susan - i used my grabber (litter picker) to pick up dog bowl to fill. I topped up the water bowl with a jug.

I even used my litter picker to scoop her poop - put a bag over end. Quite enjoyed finding ways to do things actually. 😊

Hi Susan

I had the same problem, took me a while t figure it out. I got a janitor's dustpan (it is a dustpan with a long handle, it is flush with the floor so you can push "stuff" onto it) I used the grabber to move the bowl onto the dustpan, then you can lift it up, fill it and put it back down, worked like a charm. I found the dustpan (and broom) at Canadian tire but I am sure any place like Home dept, Rona etc would have this. Good luck, I no longer need it, 4 months post-op, but  it was a lifesaver

Susan, I empathise so completely! I'm day 8 post left total hip replacement. You are so right about the supply of patience they didn't tell you that you need. I am absolutely shocking at dropping things (which I must have been like before?), and then I drop the grabber I've got too! I've threaded them with elastic and clipped one to the crutches, and have one in every room.. I'm getting quite adept at picking things up using a variety of strategies now too, all the while observing the 90 degree rule. It seems perfectly ok to me to fashion yourself some tools with sticky tape and poles if it gets the job done  :}

Do you have stick clips - they allow you to 'park' your sticks on convenient surfaces like window sills, tables etc. - all on my website.

Patience .... give me patience, and give it to me NOW !

Those of us that have been there can sympathise completely, dropping the cat's bowl freshly filled with his meat when I was on my own was so frustrating.

Oh my goodness, I actually thought I was pretty patient before this and I'm only at the end of week 1. Yes, my hubby got some sort of pipe clips (he's in the plumbing world) as the ones on the grabbers don't seem very robust, but I can still ping them off just by looking at them, that's where the elastic came in!!

This is a picture of what I used ....

My DIY Hip Kit

1.       Patience – an endless source is required, to deal with;

a.       Constantly dropping things (full pet bowls, grabbers, crutches, anything in your hands which suddenly seem to be full of jumping beans)

b.       People asking dam fool questions/making silly statements (you’re far too young to need the op; why aren’t you walking properly yet, you had the op a week ago)

c.       For partners/family/friends who, despite you constantly telling them, seem to forget that you can’t bend down to pet the cat, pick something up, tidy up etc)

d.       Yourself – there is no hurry to do things, take your time, allow yourself to sleep if you need to, do nothing if that’s what you feel like doing.  This one is probably the hardest

2.       How to deal with no upstairs bathroom – plastic bottle and a Sheewee.  Not a 100% successful solution but best one so far.

3.       Make sure you have at least 4 grabbers (living room/kitchen/bathroom/bedroom) – otherwise the grabber will always be in the wrong room.

4.       Grabbers are multi-purpose, they can grab (of course), pick up, put down, hold things – (yet more) patience is needed to learn the other things.

5.       Helpful spouses – a bit of a rare breed, so do not get impatient with them (see point 1c).  Remember they are trying hard.  Accept that just because they don’t do things the way that you do, it doesn’t mean they’re doing it wrong – just differently.

Finally, just accept that, for the moment, you can't do what you normally do and enjoy the me-time that this gives you.

Happy healing.

I am having same problem with my Cat bowls! I have to wait unt someone comes over. My cats look at me as if to say ‘why are you starving us’?

Long handled dustpan and brush available in most discount stores in UK. Scoop up bowl with it and  refill. Re cructhes when you park them near your chair readyto go again turn them upside down it stops them slipping about when propped up.

Morning Chloe, your list is a fabulous - mostly I am struggling with 1.a, d, 3 / 4. Today on my own for the first time - dry dog food scattered across the kitchen, - frozen chicken pieces ( which you can't pick up for love or money!), ice-cream, sausages, curry, potato wedges and chicken tikka all found their way to the floor whilst I was trying to get just chicken out. Then to top it all my tea went cold whilst messing about, and my bagel fell into the dog basket! Obviously my patience is being stretched but it was hard not to see the funny side, and apart from two things I managed to pick it all back up again by making a little hammock from a towel and hoisting up with two grabbers!

I haven't encountered some of the other problems on your list yet as I haven't really been out, hubby is trying his best, and although I don't need a she - wee I'd be interested to try one!

If you use dry dog food, get a PVC pipe place it over the dog bowl and pour the dog food through it.

Glad you liked my list😜

I should have also added

6. A sense of humour is essential!

7. Shee-wee - better aim than without, takes a bit of practice to use and still prone to a bit of leakage but definitely better than nothing.

If they're anything like mine, they say that when they've just finished eating.  Greedy little monsters!
