dizziness/ringing in ears

for the last month or so ive been experiencing the following:

dizziness/lightheaded. its difficult to describe - i dont feel nauseous or sick, just a slight drowsiness/drunk feeling (with none of the positive effects). from reading descriptions of vertigo where a persons surrounding are spinning, it doesnt seem to be like this. i dont have balance issues or headaches either

ringing in my ears. more so in my right ear. this would the same sound as someone might experience after going to a loud concert. but instead of lasting a few hours, i have been experiencing it for over a month. when i cover my right ear i can hear a constant shrill high pitched tone. theres no pain in my ears or sinusus

both seemed to come on around the same time and were mild/infrequent at first but got progressively worse and more frequent. they definitely seem to be related - when one worsens so does the other. reading (from paper or computer screen) seems to make both worse. the only way to get relief is to avoid reading anything or looking at a computer screen for a few hours up to a few days.

leading up to this i had been doing quite a lot of reading between my job and studying outside of work. i had experienced something like the dizziness a long time ago when i was college, but not the associated ear ringing. and it was always around exam time when i would have been doing a lot of reading. i always put it down to stress and/or overwork that goes with exams. they did come on around the same time i experienced a mild cold, but im not sure if that was related

i have noticed covering one eye stops the dizziness almost immediately but not the ringing in my ear. ive patched up one side of my glasses and going to try this for a few days to see if the ringing improves

i visited my doc a week ago and he diagnosed build up of wax in ears. he syringed ears and all wax has been gone for over a week now but symptoms have worsened so i dont this this is the cause

im short sighted and have worn glasses for nearly 15 years. my prescription was updated about a year ago and there was very little change from the previous prescription. so theres been no significant change in my eyesight in several years

does anyone know what may be causing this? i am going back to doc/optician but would just like to get some opinions frist. im not sure if my vision is the cause or something in the ear. some of the stuff ive found online include:

vertical heterophoria, where the eyes are misaligned in the head, although i dont have any apparent misalignment. and ringing in ears isnt listed as a symptom

ear conditions such as tinnitus or Vestibular neuronitis. although the dizziness associated with these seem to be more associated with vertigo

Hello,

From what I've read (bearing in mind I'm not a doctor and you will need to go to a GP/ENT to get this confirmed/denied/considered a possibility), it seems to me like you have a problem in the inner ear. There are more potentially sinister causes, though, so you may need an MRI or CT to rule those out.

Vertigo can be so severe that the whole room is spinning, but can also be milder to where, like you describe, you feel a bit drowsy/drunk. Vertigo is really synonymous with dizziness. I think I know what kind of dizziness you're talking about though, I felt a bit like that for a week while recovering from a serious bout of vertigo.

Is the ringing definitely in both ears?

The ringing in the ears and the dizziness you're having seems to point to something in the inner ear that's going wrong.

Labrynthitis or Vestibular Neuritis are possible and these are inflammations in the inner ear caused by a usually viral infection attacking the inner ear. A lot of people (although not all!) get this infection following a cold, as the virus can also potentially attack the inner ear. These infections can affect one or both ears. People with labrynthitis often report that their ears feel 'full', so I'm not sure if you can relate to that.

Pain in the ear is not a common symptom of labrynthitis and indeed not for many inner ear infections/conditions.

I'm not sure if covering your eye will really be a long term solution since I doubt that the ringing and the dizziness are unrelated, but if it seems to help you then go for it.

If it does turn out to be an inner-ear issue, then there are many possibilities. Mernière's disease is a possibility, although I would guess that it's due to an infection seeing as your symptoms came on so shortly after a cold.

Anything is really a possibility though, but I'd definitely mention all you've mentioned here to your doctor and mention the possibility of it being caused by something in the inner ear.

Ah, just realised this was posted 5 months ago! I hope everything turned out well for you!

In my case it is a hissing sound and U found this video very helpful: http://fwrd.pw/Tnts
