Dizzy spells

Hi All!

Im just wondering if dizziness is associated with PMR? But it's only when I turn my head if Im laying down and when I get up in the mornings. My doctor says it's vertigo and gave me a pile of tablets to take, but to be honest I want to know what's causing the dizziness and not just mask it, doctor cant give me any answers! So I'm wondering if anyone has had it with PMR and how long does it last, I've been suffering with it for about 3 weeks!

Im on 2mg of prednisolone.

many thanks

Andrea xx

Well I know that prednisone will cause dizziness but at the low dose your on and the fact that you have obviously been on it for a very long time and are just now starting to experience dizziness then I'm not sure.

I have dizziness from time to time.   I am now on 6.5 mg and have had it from about 8mg i think.  It used to be nearly every day, but now just occasionally.   I put or down to a side effect of the withdrawal of steroids.   It usually lasts for a few hours each time.

Sorry, this should have been to andrea !

Vertigo is just the name for the symptoms - not a diagnosis! If it is that intermittent I doubt it is either the PMR or the pred, especially if you have no other PMR symptoms at that low dose - but it could be BPPV:

There are other leaflets on this site for it but they are mainly professional ones aimed at doctors.

Something called the Epley manoeuvre will help - if you can find a doctor who will try it. But sometimes it will come back.

Do the medications work?

I find I have the same problem but not all the time. It's occasional even at 4mgs and I am uncertain if it's the PMR, withdrawal or side effects of steroids. I have just been ignoring it but do have to sit down until it goes. I have had heart checks so know it's not that. Is it your balance or some inner ear problem? I assume your doctor checked your ears. I would be asking to have them checked if they haven't done so already. I hope it clears soon as it's quite disconcerting.

Hello Andrea. I'm dizzy a lot of the time too. 'Fizzy' legs, fatigue and sore lungs that I can't take a deep breath from.

but the steroids control the pain.

My understanding is that PMR is vasculitis and so I'm just not getting enough oxygen and food around my body? (Brain fog doesn't help with my explanation).

Hoping one of the others will jump in here?

You're right, that would probably account for general dizziness and so on - Andrea's is very short-lived in specific situations.

Put 'Your Ears' into the search box at the top right hand side and read about the survey and the result is as follows:

THANK YOU to all who responded and took the time to fill in the survey.

The results have been processed and an application has been submitted to the British Society of Rheumatologsts in the category:

Young Investigator Award

BHPR Student/ Recently Qualified Health Professional Bursary.

PMR&GCAuk North East Support Charity Reg No 1138409 have already provided £1,000 as this was needed to kick-start the initial survey.

The story and outcome will be in our newsletter ‘You are Not Alone’ which will be available on line late June, early July.

We await the outcome with hope.

Thank you all for your imput, I'm hoping it'll pass as quickly as it came! When it happens it's only for 5 to 10 seconds. I've been checking symptoms  on google, my husband tells me not to and calls is 'Google.death' because dizziness covers so many things. I'm trying those exercises of sitting on the bed and tilting your head then laying down, again the room spins as if I've got a hangover (without the wine) my doctor has referred me to the hospital for a hearing test!!,, I'm not deaf I'm giddy, so why he's don't that I never know!?? Maybe it'll all settle down soon! Thank you all again.

It's all to do with ears! Balance too!

Hot hands...dizzy spells...pain in shoulders...panting with pain...inability to lift arms... loss of weight... stiffness...welcome to my world!!

Hi Rachel.    I have a sort of buzzing in my legs and feet, is that similar to the 'fizzing' you have ?  Some days it is mild, other days it is very strong.   I also have bad fatigue.

Yes!

Make certain you are well hydrated, dizziness occurs with dehydration.the prednisone can cause dizziness.

Hi Rachel, just wondering if you are still having dizzy spells ?   Mine have suddenly got worse.   I am ok when I first get up, it starts after an hour or two in the morning and I feel slightly nauseous.   The dizziness lasted for about 3 hours yesterday through what would have been a very pleasant lunch with my family.    Today again it started an hour or two after I got up and I have to sit down it is so bad.   Moving around appears to make it worse.   Also the buzzing in my feet and legs is increasing again.  I am now on 6.5 (roughly!) pred.

i am so fed up with it all !   Am beginning to wonder if it is connected to the Adrenals.

More likely your ears.........that is one of the reasons for the research being undertaken - go talk to your GP about it.

Does it or did it get worse when you reduce your pred?

Hello Jan

no more dizziness, and the fatigue seems to have gone, but the wretched weak shakey legs have returned.

i think it's because I had to increase my steroid dose 4 weeks ago and think it might be an affect from this? (14 mgs back down to 11 or 12mgs )

its a journey!

Went to GP.   He says its not ears.  He thinks it is to do with Pred, gave me a prescription, something that dissolves in the mouth, and said it would go away within 2/3 weeks !

It isnt vertigo, I have had that before.  There doesnt seem to be anything in particular that sets it off, it just comes and goes from time to time.   Similarly the buzzing/tingling in my legs and feet, which has now spread to the whole of my body.  It is very disturbing

Jan

That is exactly how the initial survey came about and is now being undertaken by the R&D dept in the NHS Queen Elizabeth Hospital.

If you follow this link to pmr-gca-northeast.org.uk, a registered charity, and then read the latest issue of 'You are Not Alone' there is a full explanation of the who, how and why this research is being undertaken.

One change, the email address to take part has been changed to Susan.pugmire@nhs.uk this change has taken place because the NHS was 'hacked' earlier this year.

In the meantime, I would be interested in what the prescription drug is called. Moreover  I do hope that it helps you and clears it away.

Sorry Lodger.   I am having difficult time with ipad playing up.   The prescription is called Prochlorperazine buccal 3mg.  Tablet has to go between upper lip and gum and left to dissolve.  I havent had the courage to try it yet - i am taking so many different things and am loth to take any more.   Meanwhile I am still having dizzy spells with mild nausea and funny sensations in my head.   Also the "fizzing" / tingling in my legs, feet and sometimes through the rest of my body.   I just want to crawl into bed and stay there.  Have seen two doctors who dont have any suggestions for me except that it is side effect of Pred.
