dizzyiness and headaches

Hi all. I am a 42 year old healthy male that is suffering from terrible headaches and dizzy spells with lightheaded feeling. This all happened about 2 weeks ago when I was out walking and all of a sudden felt dizzy and had a little headache after.I went the the ER at hospital 5 days later as was still feeling headache and dizzy spells. They done blood work that came back clear, done neuro tests on body and came back clear, don't a CT scan on brain and came back clear. They wanted to do a lumber puncture but another doctor said it was to late as there is a 72 hr window from when you first experience symtoms to test that in a way I was glad not to have that. Anyway I have been back to ER since with same problems and they said they cant help me I need to see a neuro doctor.

I am really depressed as cant go out much as to dizzy for walking long distance and don't know what to do now. The second time I went to ER the doc said Ct is fine nothing to worry about but I know my body and how I feel. I was also tested for a inner ear infection and that's ok. Again symtoms are headache that varies and dizzy spells on and off throughout the day. Am I a lost cause as I have trained in the gym for over 20 years lifting weights and I haven't been since this happened.

Hi malcy sound to me like u got what a lot of us on here have

Labyrinthitis / vestibular problems, I'm surprised you haven't been seen by ENT at the hospital

Do you have tinnitus (noises in one or both ears)? There's lot of things that can give you the symptoms your having mine was pretty much the same as yours I was diagnosed with labyrinthitis on 7/2/2014 couldn't walk properly my hearing went all together I still get the dizzies now but I'm able to work and do my normal stuff everyday but hearing taking it's tine to come back if it ever does that is it's just a waiting game with these problems that's all go to your gp and ask for a referral to an ENT specialist they should give you some answers mate

Sorry to hear about this Malc. Must be very frightening. I have had labyrinthitis x 3 times in my life and each time Stemetil tablets have helped. A friend of mine has Meuniere's Disease and this causes symptoms similar to yours. Presumably these two conditions have been ruled out? Wishing you well, Roseann

Thank you for the replies and no the ER were useless at the hospital and told me not to come back as there was nothing they can do ect. They checked my ears and said I had no infection so no idea to be honest.

It is like a feeling at the back of the head and dizziness comes and goes and eyes seem tender also for I told them all this and they did nothing. I did not think a lumber puncture would have done anything except cause pain and suffering for me to go through at the end of the day. I would gladly try anything to get my life back I really would. Malcolm

Hi Malcolm

If you have the money to spare then I would ask your GP to refer you to a consultant neurologist for a private consultation in order that you get a proper diagnosis. Be sure to ask for a copy of your MRI scan from the NHS and take it with you to a private consultation. Private consultations usually cost about £200 as long as you don't need further tests. I am amazed that your GP isn't coming up with a diagnosis or any medication for you to try. Good luck.

Well if was a ct scan they done so I will ask for a copy of that and ring the doctor first thing in the morning to make a appointment at a private hospital and I can go from there. I am going to ask the private neurologist for a mri with contrast dye and go from there. I will keep you posted on my progress and thanks again for the reply. Malcolm

Good for you Malcolm. The NHS is good, but not always THAT good! Be interested to hear how you go. Hope you'll soon find a way forward and be restored to health. All best.

Hi Malcolm.

I too have like you and the others on this site suffered from this debilitating condition.

Definitely go and see a good ENT surgeon who has experience with this. I did and he has been brilliant.

I am on new medication for the constant migraine I was getting and going to have my second lot of treatment tomorrow.

Some improvement but still off work but im hoping over time I will get stronger.

Wishing you all the best

I have found even though I am currently suffering with this that lifting weights has not bothered me however cardio does. If I use a stationary bike it will send me in a spin. It sounds very strange I know. I do feel better after I lift at least for a couple hours then I am back to the same ol same ol. Just want this crap to disappear. Hang in there brother because I am with ya.

Well chaps and chappets I think I've found the solution may be the cure it's deffinately worked for me this past few days it may sound stupid bit I tried shaking my head side to side and fast sit ups ( not at the same time ) then kneeling on the floor and go in to a hand stand sort of psition with your top of ya head on the floor, yes it sends you abit dizzy but whatever's going on inside your head or ears will correct it's self it has mine any way I've had no dizzies for the past few days except one or two little spells in the morning but thats it my mrs looked at me as though I was a complete prat but even she has noticed I don't loose my balance when walking about now give it a go if the medication isn't helping much what have you got to loose I had tablets for my first 5 days but finished em 2 weeks ago I'm not 100% but I'd say I'm at least 97%

Hi Everyone,

Thank you all for the nice replies and advice concering my headaches and dizzy spells recently.

Well i went private and had a brain MRI done and seen a neurologist at a hospital in Glasgow.

The MRI came back clear with nothing wrong at all.

He seemed to think i have chronic migraines and put me on some medicine called PROPRANOLOL at

10 mg twice a day for 1 week then up the doze to 40mg twice a day from there on.

It has been 6 days now at the low doze and i still dont feel better and cant go out anywhere as so scared in case i fall over with the dizziness. My life at the moment is HELL and no one can get to the bottom of this.

I dont know where to go from here and the local Gp dont really want to know.

Do you all think that having a MRI clear and ok is a good sign or maybe there is another problem in there that its not showing.

I was first worried about aneursyms ect but i know i would be dead by now if thats what i had and if i had a unruptured one it would maybe have shown on a normal MRI. But the neuro doctor said i dont have symptoms for that so dont know what to do right now.

Sorry you are still suffering Malcolm. But great news that MRI showed nothing sinister. I am not a medical expert in any way, but my money would be on labyrinthitis or Meniere's Disease. But, what do I know? Wishing you well.

I would try anything to find out what i have wrong with me at this point in time but the local doctor does not want to know as the mri is clear and thats it.

I am a very fit person and always trained for over 20 years and just cant understand what has went wrong with me.

I never thought i would get sick of staying in and watching one movie after another but i am haha.

I did mention to the doctor about my ears and they looked inside and said nothing wrong.

Have you tried Stemetil tablets (usually effective for labyrinthitis)? So sorry to hear that you're having such a horrible time of it with no proper diagnosis. That must be the most frustrating part of it, not to mention the way your'e feeling. I think if it were me, I would continue to make a real nuisance of myself at the doctor's surgery and ask to be referred to an ENT specialist, or a general specialist. Sometimes we have to fight to be heard, even if that means paying for a private appointment. Wishing you well, and soon.

Roseann I have not tried stemetil tablets yet but almost willing to try anything at this point. I go back in to see a neurologist next month to see what they say. I am guessing that he will tell me that I am having migraines or something. So many people going through what I am are saying that their neurologists tell them the same thing.I am not expecting miracles yet trying to be a bit optimistic.

Keep fighting the good fight you guys.

I have been having this exact same problem for 2 weeks now, with no relief. Had a ct scan tonight that was normal. (Even though I was having shooting pain from my forehead through to the back of my head during the scan)

Did your doctors come up with a diagnosis? Did you finally get some relief?

Hello all.

I've been reading all your comments and suggestions and I have found them so useful.

I have been off work since Dec when I had a sudden attack of vertigo, so frightening.

I was lucky that my GP instantly diagnosed Labrinitis and was seen 6weeks later by a ENT consultant who diagnosed the same as well as Positional Vertigo and migraine related vertigo.

I had 2 Epley Manoeuvre which quite frankly made me feel awful but did work.

I have now had 6 sessions of VRT and I have improved.

Im on regular medication for the migraine and have not had any since February (I was getting them daily before this).

What I have found like most of you is that this is a debilitating condition that other's find hard to understand as to them you look "ok" when in fact you feel far from ok.

ive found walking albeit tiring has helped me and keeping as active as possible (ive not been to any keep fit session).

My consultant has said that I wont be able to go back to my full time job because of the tiredness and stress, both of which are particular triggers for me.

like alot if others my hearing is not great and I have to battle the daily tinitits which quite frankly some days is so loud that is leaves me feeling quite depressed.

I'm in the Guilford area if any ones elses is.

A big thank you to this site as it has kept me sane when ive been in a not so good place.

Hello Diana

Can I ask you what your migraines feel like?

I've suggested to my wife that maybe my headache is a form of migraine but because she gets severe migraines she passes mine off as a headache and because I never really got headaches prior to my inner ear issues I don't have a proper point of reference. All I know is I have some form of headaches everyday apart from when I'm sleeping.

Also would you mind telling me what medicine you take for your migraines?

Thanks

Hello Darren.

Yes of course. For me they always start over my left temple and make me feel really sick and dizzy.I often get problems with my vision and become light and heat sensitive.

Mine will wake me at night

I was taken injections but the ENT guy has put me on 50mg of Topiramate which has stopped them completly. For the first in years I am migraine free.

I hope this helps.
