Do I HAVE TO take HRT ie TIBOLONE?

I had a bilateral salpingo oophorectomy (removal of both ovaries and fallopian tubes) a month ago, and was started on Tibolone 2 weeks ago. Im really not keen on taking this as family history of BC. C could I get away without it? Even though the night flushes are killing me. I feel im putting weight on and generally just dont feel myself, any suggestions?

Hello. I had a similar operation some years ago and with a hysterectomy as well. I didn't stat taking HRT for about 6 months after the operation. You don't say how old you are but the choice surely must be yours and if you didn't have menopausal symptoms beforehand I would wait unless your doctor thinks the hormones will benefit your recovery

Hi matron

Im 43, I had no symptoms before my op. The operation put me straight into "surgical menopause". The gynaecologist wanted me to go on hrt for a year so as to protect my bones etc from early menopause consequences, but is there any other alternative because I feel im already struggling with weight problems?

HRT is commonly prescribed to prevent osteoporosis so I can see why your consultant felt it was wise to suggest Tibolone but personnaly I would go to see your GP. He could prescribe a different HRT or prescribe a medication that is specifically for prevention of osteoporosis. HRT doesn't suit every woman so go and discuss it with your GP or consultant.

Hi matron

Thanks for your help, ive got appointment for gp so I'll keep you posted smile
