Do I need 2nd hip done so soon?

Hello Out there!

Have read this forum many times and have found all the information invaluable. I am 49 and had a left THR last August. Everything went fab and recovering nicely, until just before Christmas, starting having pain in my right hip and thigh, much worse than my left ever was. A bit devastated as I thought I could hold off as long as I could to get the other one done. I suppose I'm asking has anyone else experienced this so soon after getting one hip replaced, also the pain seems to be more from my thigh bone?? Going to see Consultant very soon but thought would put it out there

Thanks for reading, hope it makes sense! 😅

Hello

i can understand exactly where you are coming from...

i had my first replacement in April 2014 after years off hip pain, once the operation was done i felt good as i had no pain recovery was hard but alot easier to deal with

May 2014 i started getting pain in the other hip,i kept thinking it may be stressed due to operation and consultant agreed however by august/sept it was clear hip was going down the same route as operated hip.

had appt with consultant in november 2014 and he agreed hip needed to be replaced

operation 18th February 2015

good luck with your appt with consultant let me know how you get on

Hello Dee and Denise,  All I can say is I'm jealous of you Denise.  I had my right hip done August lst of 20l4 and the left hip is at the point the right one was, and I have to wait at least another year to get surgery....even though the same doctor who did my right will do my left and he knows by the MRI and Bone scan results the left is just as bad..they won't book two surgeries in the same year...so another full year of waiting....and by the way both my consultations took exactly 2.5 minutes each...I'm in Toronto and it depends on what Doctor/Hospital they work out of for surgery times....and if you want to get a second opinion, then to start from step one and it can take another year...guess I can't complain as I know I will have it eventually compared to some people in the states that have to wait years and have limited medical coverage....best of luck to both of you,

Patricia

After I had first hip replacement everything was great for 18 months and I was walking well and long distances. I knew the other hip had mild arthritis but I hoped it would be years before I needed replacement. However within a couple of months it deteriorated very quickly and I was back to limping and whingeing with pain. So I had it done. Yet other people only ever need one hip replacing. It's one of the mysteries of life and I have never heard a convincing argument for what causes OA in the hips. I don't believe the wear and tear argument. I only have to look at the people ten or twenty years older than me who cycle and play badminton inbetween long distance hiking who have no OA at all to know it does not add up.

Hi Patricia

i feel very grateful to have a very good consultant who does listen and could see for himself how bad the hip is...on my appt i had problems getting out of a chair consultant witness how much i struggles and how poor mobility is.

i think two operation in 10 months must be hard on the body but feel the constant pain is just as bad if not worse

wish you all the best xx

Hi dee, i am almost the same as you.  Op done in oct 2014, after initial pain subsided and after check up at 6 weeks started doing the walking, gym work, pool etc, definitely not overdoing it but the groin pain in my other hip started.  I see the cons in feb and expect to get that one done soon after, no point being lopsided, i want to get back to full fitness and i am almost back to where i was before i had the first one done!!   Fortunately i can manage pool work, aquajogging is fantastic for sore hips, but walking is definitely too painful, and forget the gym, even cycling on the exercise bike was agony. I think getting the other one done soon after will be beneficial, then you can recover from both whereas if you leave it then it will just get worse and and before i had my first one done i couldn't even get in the car, let alone drive it, and i was virtually housebound.  Don't want to go down that route again.  Good luck us let us know if/when you get a date for the next one.

Thanks Denise I will let you know what he says, good luck with your own op

Thank you jennifernz

You have described exactly how I am feeling, cant wait to get some sort of fitness back, I am at that point where I am struggling to drive and losing some independance which I hate! Please let me know how you get on with your Cons as well we can compare notes!!

Hi Dee,

I have. My first one went fab and 4 months later I had the second one done. My second one was botched by the surgeon and requires a revision, however, this bad luck had nothing to do with having both THR's done clone together. Here in the States there is a minimum four month wait between THR's.

I wanted mine done close together because I had Avascular Necrosis and knew there was no hope of saving the joints, they could do nothing but get worse.

I hope the best outcome for you !

I'm another waiting for a 2nd THR..

Similarly to everyone else my problems began around 9mnths after my 1st THR.

To say I was bitterly disappointed would be putting it mildly.

It does seem to happen fairly often..

The thought of going through another op is tough, but nothing we can do if we want to have a normal life again..

Ive read arthritis can eventually spread to any joint in the body, now that really worries me.

All the best to all 2nd THR patients confused

Left thr sept 26.  Very pleased with progress until just recently......pain in the left thigh.  Just thought I would share that as it does effect my walking w/limp or without limp.  Naproxen dosent seem to help.

I'm afraid I'm an example of arthritis spreading thru joints. My THR is day after tomorrow & is 5th joint replacement . then just learned ny other hip is pretty bad too. And 8 yrs after extensive back surgery my myelogram just came back saying all the disks were badly deteriorated. I know I'm 66 but not ready to quit moving. Just gotta have hope and find happiness in the small things.

wishing you the best

lee

He Dee,

I've just had my left one done and the right is already complaining about having to be 'in charge'. When I have my 6 week checkup with the consultant I'm going to push to have the right done asap. I don't feel like I'll get the full benefit from having a new hip until both are done.

Good luck!

Oh dear Lee,sorry to hear your story.

Im 65 and up to 3yrs ago was in great health..

Then the dreaded arthritis set in..I had  LTHR last Feb and have a RTHR scheduled for 6th Feb..so the countdown has begun.eek!

Just in the last few months my lower spine has started to give me pain, which does ease as I move around.

As you say you learn to find pleasure in the things you CAN do,and not to dwell too much on what you can't....there's always someone else worse off than you.

Im hoping that my hip op will improve my back pain, but not holding out much hope..time will tell.

Keep your head up.

I hear you. I know my left hip is pretty bad and SI on that side has arthritic spurs , and the last knee replacement is in trouble--- yet I'm still having the right hip replaced tomorrow. I'm scared the left side is just going to give way.   I think, given the option, I'd wait until your new hip is stable enough that you are sure it can take supporting the right side, then go for it! If you do it too soon you might harm the new one?

i wish you best of luck in any decision, and may God bless you.

lee

Well, walking hinky with bad hip can cause your back to hurt---the whole back hip knee ankle thing is interconnected. So maybe you will get relief when the THR is done and healed! Stay positive as much as possible but realize some down times are normal & ok.

God Bless,

lee

Hi Lee, to be honest my operated leg is already becoming dominant. Luckily, thanks to how long the whole process takes its going to be at least 6 months anyway, so I'll have to be patient.

Exciting times! Wishing you well ☺

Good morning Dee,

makes a lot of sense, I also have my left hip done in August went to physical therapy was doing very well. Until the first cold Spot  hit. Just before Christmas. My right leg knee thigh & hip started hurting more than the left. I was also left with nerve pain and numbness in my left leg and foot. I'm having a nerve conduction test and x-ray to see what's going on. Doc wants to do my right hip six months after the left. Well the sixtth of February will be six months. And I say(NO WAY)! I'm learning there is ante rial an a posterior hip replacement. I Believe I had posterial. I have learned the anterial approach is less invasive, therefore less painful, faster healing. If I ever have to have the right hip done I will go   enteral.

I hope this is helped you
