Hi Mary, i am pre-op (on 5th April) and i watched a whole THR surgery on youtube around 2 weeks go....omg i was depressed for days after i saw it...no wonder it takes long to regain strength and re-build all the tissues, bones and muscles.
It makes me feel better as it accounts for the aches I am getting . Can't believe it was 8 weeks tomorrow where does time go . Shows I'm getting older ha ha .
Lol.... Sorry, the way i imagined you reading your post in my head... I have to admit to watching lots of clips and animations etc pre op ( now 9days post), but all after i spoke to consultant 18 mths ago and agreed to surgery, so didnt know which method i would be subjected to lol. As it turned out i had "superpath" procedure, which of course i immediately looked up on youtube! :D but whatever techniquie used its a pretty brutal op for sure! Im an engineer of 25yrs plus so fascinating in many ways to watch
I was an engineer too..THR is very much biomechanics, and the surgeons who perform these ops have my full respect,it's quite a technical feat.
If I made a slight mistake on a machine it wasn't that big a deal, but if a surgeon messes up they can ruin some ones life..its a massive responsibility, and I can understand why mistakes are made occasionally,no wonder they all seem to be very confident people.
A good reason to always try to find a surgeon with a good track record.
Pleased with my recovery , think it's going well , do get some pain . Starting physio next week as I have a limp now which I didn't ha pave before .
my biggest tips are prepare the house before hand eg get clothes ready , put things out in kitchen .not so bad if you don't live alone but I do .
Aftewards rest rest rest whenever you feel you need it and don't feel guilty . I was incredibly tired at times just came over me in waves . Just come back from town and that's my lot for today .
someone on here recommended. Whey protien shakes to build up muscle . I started after op but would have before if I had known . Anything else just ask . X
I've just watched the youtube video of 'posterior THR' (as that's the type I had).
Amazing!! We're not really squeamish in our family so I watched amazed - aren't those guys fantastic. I didn't realise there was so much use of saws, hammers and drills
One thing I do know is that I'm glad I had a GA and not a spinal - I really wouldn't have wanted to be aware of that going on!
It makes me feel better about still feeling feeble at 9 weeks post op. I'm just waiting for my 2nd lot of painkillers to kick in before I can do my exercises - then it's off to the supermarket, at least there I can lean on the trolley!
Dont worry too much about the op,it's not as bad as you might think.
Post op be prepared for 3wks of sleeplessness, pain from the op site, which can be managed with the painkillers they give you,but be careful with codeine phosphate which can give bad constipation. Eat a healthy diet with plenty of fibre and even if you don't like them eat some prunes and juice every day which helps avoid constipation.
Dont overdo the ex recuses..and rest is very important.
Take things one day at a time, and tell yourself the discomfort is only for 3-6wks from when your improvement can be dramatic.
Im nearly 6wks post op and feel better as each day passes.
watched the full vid today (4 weeks post op) and as a DT teacher i`m thinking between engineering, construction and textiles we could have done this at school and saved a hospital bed!!!!!!
