Doctor gave me Citalopram 20 mg, any advice?

I've had anxiety since I was 9 years old after my aunts passing. She passed away from cancer and ever since that I've been paranoid about cancer. Every little symptom I feel, I think I have cancer. I went to therapy that young and eventually got better.

Recently, my grandfather fell ill with cancer and again, the anxiety has came back. I'm not petrified that I'm next to get cancer. I've gotten many blood tests and exams to assure me that I'm fine, but I still don't believe it because of the physical symptoms I'm feeling.

My doctor has prescribed me with Citalopram 20 mg and I am very scared to take it.

I know everyone is different with the way medication works, but I'd like to read some experiences with you guys. I want to read the good, the bad, and the ugly.

As of now, I'm terrified that I have breast cancer although I have no obvious symptoms, and I've been checked TWICE with a breast exam (no lumps). I am only 22 and they assure me that I'm okay, yet I'm still terrified.

I'm at the point now where I feel this medication is necessary for me to take, and I'm scared that I will get worse.

So please, any advice or comments will help. Thank you

I think the cit will definitely help you with those thoughts.  But it'll take time to work and you will prob have side effects to deal with initially.  These will prob settle down after a few weeks or so.  Give yourself at least a couple months for it to start helping you.  So don't lose heart if you don't feel benefit straight away.

I was on it for 5 years and came off altogether 5 weeks ago.  Not easy getting off, but doable if you take it really slow.

They really helped me and the side affects after they settled were mild.  Annoying, but they were far outweighed by the benefits.

Initially you'll probably have increased anxiety, this doesn't mean they are not working, it's a side effect.  Keep in mind that it is a side effect and you'll get through it.

Good luck!

Ness, thank you so much for your comment. Just reading how cit has helped you gives me hope. i'm going to talk to my doctor and see if i can also get a referral to see a therapist or start cognitive behavorial therapy. I'm glad you're doing well off of it!

Glad you're doing positive steps to sort yourself out.  Half the battle is recognising the problem.

Im only 5 1/2 weeks into stopping.  So I've had the worst of the withdrawal.  Emotionally a bit up and down, but not bad.  Need to give it about another 6 weeks to be sure that I'm completely settled.

Youll be fine hun.  There's always something which will help. Take care! Xx
