Does citalopram help with social anxiety?

Hi all - I've been taking 40mg fluoxetine for 6 weeks now and while it seems to help lift my mood it doesn't seem to help when I get really anxious.

My main problem at the moment is a lack of confidence in business and some social situations, often feeling like I can't speak for nerves. Yet when there's no pressure on me, I'm as eloquent as the next person.

Very interested to know whether Citalopram helped you with social anxiety and confidence as I'm determined to overcome this.

Many Thanks.

hi, for me a definitive yes!

i started to suffer very terribly from low self esteem, cofidence, self worth, anxiety  and panic attacks prior to taking them - they did the buisness back then for me and now feel its time to come off them.

however, they can also dull your personality, mood, outlook, activeness and sometimes lose lucidity etc... they are also a pain to come off of.

if you do go on them remember they will take a few weeks to kick in. try not to drink too much alcohol (if you drink that is as they play havoc the next day!) and still exercise.

they allowed me to function .

all the best and good luck!

Hi David. I have been prescribed Citalopram 20mg for social anxiety. I too get very anxious in some social and business situations and get a horrible ugly neck and chest rash that I can't control.

I have only been on them for 4 weeks and haven't really seen the benefits yet but I have seen some positive stories on here so I'm hopeful they will start to work soon.

Hi Al and Jumanda - I appreciate your replies - I've been on fluoxetine for 6 weeks now and I think it has helped level me out to cope with simple things and improve sleep. However i can get so anxious in these social situations (it's the fear of screwing up) that I don't feel any different to when not taking fluox. Just wondering whether citalopram may be better as seems to work for a lot of people.
