Does this sound like Menieres disease??

LAST YEAR LABOR DAY (2014) I WENT OVER TO MY AUNTS HOUSE FOR A PARTY SHE BOUGHT EVERYBODY TURKEY SANDWHICHES AND A SNACK CALLED VEGGIE STICKS WITH SEA SALT SPRINKLED ON THEM ,IT WAS A HOT DAY I WAS DRINKING SPORTS DRINK SUCH AS GATORADE/POWERADE AND ALL OF THE SUDDEN I GOT A VERY BAD VERTIGO ATTACK THREW UP EVERYWHERE AND LAYED DOWN FOR ABOUT A HOUR IN A DARK ROOM TILL I CAN STAND UP AGAIN AND GET HOME SLEPT ALL DAY THE NEXT DAY AND ENDED UP GOING TO THE HOSPITAL AND GOT A MRI SCAN WHICH CAME OUT GOOD THEY PRESCRIBED ME MECLAZINE THEN GOT HOME AND ATE CHICKEN AND FRIES SPRINKLED ON THEM WENT TO SLEEP WOKE UP IN THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT AND GOT ANOTHER VERTIGO ATTACK NOT AS BAD BUT CLOSE ENOUGH WHERE I WAS READY TO PASS OUT ON THE FLOOR ...THOUGHTS??

Hi, it does sound like Ménière's disease, I had a similar attack, whole room spinning could not stop my eyes from darting everywhere, just dropped to the floor while brushing my teeth, managed to get to a phone called for an ambulance, said it was a panic attack.

after about a week of dizziness and feeling sick I went to my go who could see fluid in my ear, and prescribed betahistamine, appointment with ent weeks later, he said he couldn't see anything, still dizzy and feeling sick, was referred for balance test said I have something called BPPV benign positional vertigo, crystals in the labyrinth.

I would ask your gp for an ent referral.

good luck.

Hi Jordan

It could be that your symptoms were sparked by sensitivity.  Additives and preservatives can be a problem or it could have been sparked by noise affecting the ear.  Was there loud music?  Did your conversations involve someone speaking close to your ear in order for you to hear a conversation?

I suffer with vertigo, migraine and tinnitus.  I try and avoid noisy situations as much as possible but of course it isn't always possible.  I also try and avoid additives and preservatives in food and drink.  Personally, I would never drink sports drinks!  I avoid alcohol, coffee and tea containing caffeine because these can be triggers.

I hope you find the cause of your attack and begin to feel better.

Hi,

I have had MD for about eight years now, so you'd think I'd have known better. We took our 14 year old son to a Young Falconer's Day at the local Hawk Centre this week, and on the way back he was hungry.  So we stopped at Burger King and all had a meal.  I had their Fanta.  Now, I have drunk Fanta before from a can, but this was from their machine and was very orange.  Within two hours I was having the worst vertigo attack I've had in months, that came on really quickly and ended with me puking that Burger King meal back up again.  I'm sure it was the additives in the drink.  I would suspect your sports drinks if I were you, as ones that are designed to give you energy are often full of caffeine as that is what gives you the kick.  Drink water next time!

i went to the ENT he looked at me like i was stupid and threw it off as i just had a "ear cold"  and i have hearing loss in my left ear and my balance is 33% off on the right side

Hi Jordan, it sure sounds like Menieres, did you get the darting eyes where if you try to focus on a point it darts around, Ive had MD for 10 years and it started with the attacks you descibe although it has changed over the last couple of years, I see you and others talk about caffine and preservatives as a possible cause or catyalist, which may be helpfull,if only there was a direct relation between certain foods many of us would be overjoyed but alas what works for some has no effect on others, and that includes the medication we are given, the reply by Scampi is good, and whilst BPPV is not Menieres it is close and the crystals thing is worth bearing in mind. good luck with a specialist and dont be fobbed off

I know what you mean the ent guy who I went to see was useless, said he couldn't see anything untoward, said my hearing test was fine, I can hardly hear out of my left ear and the buzzing it's so bad, I have constant pain and pressure behind my eyes and sinus, and it was him that sent me for balance test, I was told exactly the same.

I hope you get it sorted soon.

Hi peter I to had the darting eyes, it was so frightening, I was just brushing my teeth and fell to the floor like a sack of potatoes, I could not focus I wasn't sick but I felt sick, I had to crawl along the floor to get to the phone, it was the worst thing ever, BPPV is caused by either an infection or a bump to the head, I had a bump to the head about 2 weeks before the episode on the back and then all this happened, didn't think to mention to anyone as it was ok at the time of fall and now I feel a bit stupid after all this time, I have another ent app in May so will have to mention it then.  I have awful pains behind my eyes and nose and pressure in the left hand temple and ear and the buzzing is awful, must get this sorted.

yes went to a ent threw it off as a "ear cold" hearing loss in left ear and balance damage on my right side then went to a DR that speicalizes in dizzyness ran no tests told him everything you just read and right away said "menieres" he gave water pills for 6 months
