Whether you've had a replacement or considering one, we can't be too CAREFUL and falling is the last thing we need to do.
My friend who had the posterior at 82 has fallen twice outside and has had major setbacks, fracture in ankle and in the wrists and knee cap. She prides herself on being careful, but it can happen and it does often that people fall.
One woman I've known and was already in a wheelchair and had a heart condition, she was in 80's, so when she finally was approved and surgeon felt she could go thru the Anterior, she did it.
On her rehab and she had a caregiver with her, while walking outside with her walker, she fell and hit her head on concrete and died....
So after all she went thru for this, she's dead and as a result of a fall.
I've fallen twice in my apt on carpeting and didn't hurt my hip but shocked my system otherwise...
I am so careful and go slowly and so aware of everything around me...
Be kind to your new joints and don't abuse them, these are artificial parts in our body and what I know FOR ME, my stability is off, so I am so aware of my walking. Just thought I'd mention this as it's important.
And be aware of all that FLUORIDE in your waters...it's awful for our joints and organs.....use TP if you think you need Fluoride but spit it out.... I avoid all "F" as best I can, but all our foods are also grown in fluoridated water from city sources....except for natural rain which we don't get too much of in Southern Calif.
Such good advice. We probably wouldn't run for the bus in platform soles or stilleto heels; let's be as mindful/cautious when we're "wearing" replacement joints!!
Also on this Fluoride issue, be AWARE that the class of antiobiotics like Cipro, Levaquin etc, these are quinolines....they contain Fluoride and MANY report joint damage from taking these drugs....
I've never taken them, BUT being on a FM/CFS support group for years, I've heard stories about the damage these drugs can do....some permanent joint damage.
I've loved my retirement as learning and keeping healthy as best I can has been my job/hobby....and sharing my knowledge with everyone I can, who will hear me. So much damage done out there due to pharma drugs etc....
If one bit of wisdom/knowledge touches another, we've done a lot.
Thanks Joy for all that informations i didn't know that, now i know i'll make sure i try and advoid them as much as possible.
Am so frighten of falling from i was a child, it's worse now .
You are SO right. I am moving more carefully these days. I do not want to go back under the knife. That is why i have gone back to the pool.
BTW..i noticed that after being in the water the numbness on the front of my right thigh is much less pronounced, it does come back gradually during the day though but it is good to know that water helps.
This is a very good point. I have been known to fall over a lot my whole life, due to rushing around too much.Only since my hip condition got worse I have been really careful and was proud of not falling over for ages.
UNTIL LAST SUNDAY! I tried to go shopping with my new shopping trolley and fell heavily just minutes from home.Had to go home dripping blood from knees and abandon the shopping trip.
The thing is to be aware at all times and not let enthusiasm make us forget caution.Sometimes it is hard to remember we are no longer so young and fit.In our heads we are still that energetic young person.
It is good to be reminded to look where we are going.
You make a valid point Joy. I have fallen many times throughout my life breaking alsorts from, toes, to wrists to collar bones! I had THR last yr and now back at work full time. But since being at work I have fallen over twice, no damage done just my pride, as one fall was outside and other inside, was quite shaken on both falls. I'm very unsteady when I walk so I don't rush (can't if I tried). I feel like I'm walking on air, does anyone else feel like that? Last winter it was so windy it blow me over. I'm only 52 so I can't imagine how vulnerable how older people feel. I'm forever looking around when walking which makes it more difficult when out. Nothing will stop me though, not wind or dodgy pavements.....best wishes to you all
Very well said.. "Stuff Happens" ! We r given a better start in the joint dept now we need to take care and be mindful of our new limitations.
Elaine..
understand UR many descriptions and new limitations with THR .
PT can help build stronger muscles.. THR surgery the first time took me 2 years to get all my strength back that I could even the muscles had limitations menopause etc and illness.
It's not easy by any means it a daily challenge. I wish u the best thru UR daily challenges each step is a step for mobility...it can get better.. I cannot afford to think otherwise..
TC&GB
I like UR analogy that we r young and fit.. I have had many falls to.. Messed up knees badly.. We can't even brace for a fall our hips don't move that way anymore.. So we take harder hits when we do hit the pavement.. I am very much UR clone and miss my past active life.
adjusting to my new limitations and mindful of movements has helped ..less falls and sprains ...
Hows ur knees.. ?????That sounds like a really hard fall...
Good news .. Happy to hear UR getting better. Water therapy is the best. Many THR patients will tell everyone it's the best way to add healing with less stress on the body.
That's how they treat racehorses with tendon and muscle injuries. We r much like those spendy race horses depending on therapy to get us thru the next race!,,
Many clinical studies do show damage as discussed here. Yet the amounts of the offending drugs have to be taken is far beyond our lifetime ingestion. Lab animals were given extraordinary amt to make a point. So as long as UR ony in jesting a gallon a day ie clinical studies it's ok..
So if u have a infection of ant kind anti biotics will save UR life especially with THR . Every dental visit protocol is taking antibiotics before & after dental proceedures. Blood infections thru the gums can be very dangerous for THR patients.. Just a little nag...there is not enough fluoride in our daily lives to equal the lab trials.
Its it's always good to be aware of UR inviornment be cautious know UR meds and limitations.
PLZ don't avoid anti biotics when infection of any kind is diagnosed.
See protocols with infections THR..
THANKX
Many grew up in New Mexico start as example on fluoridated water. There is no evidence that it has created issues u suggest. In order to we need to ingest 300 times more per day to equal the effects of F on lab clinical trials.
PLZ see clinical trials F,. Amts needed to effect the body.
THANKXTHANKX
Albuquerque and Santa Fe recently removed years of fluoride from public waters.....Portland, OR just rejected it. Witchita KS rejected it...Honolulu and Fairbanks removed "F" from already public water. Santa Barbara, CA rejected it in 1999, Santa Cruz, CA rejected it and 100's more communities worldwide.
98% of Europe rejects it.
It's Toxic and it would be like communities adding anti depressants or laxatives to city waters without our consent...it is wrong and I believe many health issues are related to this practice.....thyroids are damaged. Many many of us believe it's just plain wrong, use TP if a person wants to fluoridate their teeth. Our joints don't need it for sure. I've been in this "fight" too many years and my desire is to live long enough to see it all eradicated from "public" waters.
I'm not saying don't avoid abx drugs, just a warning about the damage from the class I'm talking about...there are 100's of abx drugs. Be aware.
I don't feel stable walking around a wet area, so I avoid the pools etc...I don't even soak in a bathtub.....if I could get down in the tub I couldn't get out, my tub is old and low in my apt...plus there is the chlorine and fluoride factors.....
I know...swimming is not kind to your hair and skin and all the work afterwards - taking a shower, wash your hair....again. by the time i'm done half a day has gone by, that's why i cannot do it more than once a week, usually on sunday morning. But it does feel great.
There r toxics in water.. No doubt. More testing needs to be done.
