Dont understand This Spirometry please help

I’m 50 year old male X smoker

I had to get an x-ray done and a Spirometry test got a call from my Doctor to go and see him for the results, he tells me I have COPD and a shadow on my lung.

At work I had a new Spirometry test done and here are the readings in %

EVC 83%

VC   83%

FEV1  87%

FUV    94%

PEF    99%

FEV1/FUC 96%

FFF  25     65%

FEF  50     64%

FEF  75     59%

FEF25-75   62 %

I’m no doctor but I’ve been searching the internet and to me it doesn’t look like I have COPD . By look at the resorts

but can I have copd and still produce these numbers, or am I reading the thing wrong

PS sorry about the grammar never was very good at school

Hi Paul what's your FEV1/FVC ratio?

Hi Gary

its 96% ?

Wow! Going on your spirometry results I'd say you don't have COPD but I'm no doctor lol

Your results are better than mine I only managed 78% for my predicted values

Yes I know

what I didn't say was he also told me I have over inflated lungs ( they aren't very elastic due to smoking )

so your cant see anything  and agree with me , I have to see the specialist about the shadow,  I'm confused

See what what the specialist says when you see them mate, hope you get to the bottom of it

Hi, Paul.  I just got diagnosed with COPD a few months ago.  I have never smoked a day in my life, but my parents lit one right after another.  I am one of the very few unlucky people who got this condition from second hand smoke!  I am already in Stage 3...my doctor just kept blaming my breathlessness on my asthma, which I also have!  I had a Spiometry Test done and was diagnosed with COPD, but she also ordered an oximetry test...it's an overnight test to check your oxygen level when you are sleeping.  Mine dropped down to 72%, the norm being 95% to 100%.  That showed how much my lungs were actually working to breathe.  I suggest you ask your dr. for this test for a clearer picture of what's going on with you.  Hope I've helped a little.  God bless you with good health!

Thanks patty

I still waiting to see the specialist. I'm just finding it hard that I have COPD with the readings I generated

I sincerely hope you were misdiagnosed!!  Let me know when you are certain of the diagnosis of COPD.  it's an awful disease, robbing me of what little energy I have left. Good luck and God bless you!!  😃

Thanks Patty for replying and I will post the results good or not so good.

Hi, I have been a pulmonary patient since birth, now 56 years.  Never smoked  but my parents did.  By age 30 I lost 70% of my lung capacity which is permanent.  By age 45 COPD was added onto my diagnosis.

My lugs are distended and over inflated and I too have a shadow, but it is just my breast bone which protrudes slightly on one side due to the life long asthma.  Hopefully your shadow will be simple.  Prayers to you.

It is my understanding that once elasticity is lost, it is permanent.  I do not understand all the numbers,  but I do have, at my request, a complete lung function study done every year to establish a baseline for future comparisons.

Oxygen will not help my particular condition.  My problem is that I cannot exhale all the air that I inhale and I might as well be sucking on the tailpipe of a gasoline motor car!  Hence the over inflated lungs.

If you do have COPD, there are wonderful medications to help you survive.  In particular, BREO and SPIRIVA and PRO-AIR inhalers.  My condition is severe but those three inhalers plus a nebulizer with DUONEB and occasional antibiotics and corticosteroid injections (long and short acting), I am still alive and raising my grandchildren.

I hope the best for you!  And please, if you have COPD, take the medications exactly as suggested and perhaps you can hold off becoming worse.

Dawn

i've had mine done today mine was 25% of lung capacity, not to goo but not to bad

i got C O P D and had mine done today, a poor 25% but it has been at this level for 3 yrs, so not feeling to bad about it

New to this as well. What is a 66%?Fev 66%

Hi all

I've just got back from seeing my chest specilest and she doesn't think I have COPD and the shadow is nothing to worry about, but I'm having a ct scan and one Spirometry test at the hospital in January

Hi all

just a quick not to let you know I have a CT scan date for the 17th December

Thanks

Hi all hope everyone is well
