hi all, just a word of warning to everyone out there who is undecided on weather to wait to have surgery or not, DONT! I'm a year out from THR and whilst my new hip is fantastic my poor back is not so, the results from my MRI scan today confirm that I now have a prolapsed disc (lower), my surgeon has confirmed that it was probably made worse by walking so badly for the last 5 years while I procrastinated! I would like to ask if anybody would have an opinion on weather the actual surgery may have worstened it? I've seen online op's and I wonder if all the pulling etc could have had a effect as my back has most definitely been worse since surgery, (I do not have any neural impingement, thank goodness)
Hi Jackie can say about post op having my THR this Friday and dreading it but most of the pain I get is severe lower back pain everyone refuses to look into it saying its prob hip and let's see what happens with HP op osteopath says probably due to way I walk cause of hip and no nerve type pains but stiffness ++ on days back is ok hip is bad so must be interlinked don't think slipped disc comes and goes as quick as that I am hoping for a back cure how was yours before op?
Hello .... I too have been procrastinating about getting R THR and waited until I was so restricted in my movements and in a lot of pain - It is your decision (as it was mine) and nobody can really make it for you ... I am 9 weeks post-op now - you know when the time is right ... I can only say that I am happy it is done ...
Good luck and lots of strength these coming days ... warm hug
Hi hippies
Agreeing don't wait a second....second hip now 11 weeks new and all is soooo much easier.
There is also a danger realignment of walking style means somewhere else in body is painful...In my case my shoulder.
Will see GP thurs about this...but 100% no regrets about the hip op.

Hi Jackie, I waited 4 years before I took the plunge, that was in January this year and whilst my hip is great now except a bit of muscular pain which is expected, my lower back is starting to give me some discomfort, something I haven't suffered from for about 9 years. I put it down to walking properly for the first time in 4 years. Overall I do regret waiting so long for my op.
Hi Jackie.
I totally agree! I put my op off because of work commitments. We run a B&B and I told my surgeon I couldn't have 6 weeks off until January this year. I should really have had it done last summer. By the time I had my op I could walk about 50m down the road - with a stick, and I was on massive amounts of codiene, paracetamol and even liquid morphine sometimes to help me sleep.
Trouble now, at 18 weeks post op, is that my muscles had become so weak through non-use that it's taking ages for my strength to build back up. The physio I have now says he wishes he'd got his hands on me sooner post-op. he is helping me build strength slowly but surely. I still have a limp and he's suggested using a walking pole to help correct my gait.
I have OA in my lower back so that exacerbates pain management but I know that doing exercise which work on my core muscles will not only help my hip and gait but also my back.
I have OA starting in my other hip and, as soon as it gets the stage for an op, I'll be fighting my way into the hospital shouting 'Get it done!'
I have to say my lower back has been agony. I have just had one replacement, but need a second. It's been 10 years since I 've been in pain, but all was delayed as I was told I was too young.
Reading your post is what I feel is the problem with my back...
Apologies for late reply! My back was not fab before the op but most definitely worse after,I'm hoping to get some physio to alleviate it somewhat, thank you for your reply, best of luck xx
Gosh it's so very hard making the right decision at the right time isn't it? We can always find all sorts of reasons why not, mine was mainly financial but can you put a price on health? Tough call when the bills need to be paid, thank you so much for your reply and sending you my best wishes xx
For certain my back pain now is far worse than my hip pain ever was, I hope you get some answers xxx
Hi Caroline .... checking in with you to find out you are doing - I understand thta you had your THR today ... I hope all went well and that you will have a good night - love to hear from you - big hug
