Double hernia operation yesterday.

I figure since I can't get come enough to sleep, I would write my experience on how my hernia surgery went.

Yesterday, I had an abdominal/inguina hernia and umbilical hernia repaired. Everything went smooth with the surgery. I was lucky enough to get the first surgical slot of the day, which meant getting up at 5am and be at the hospital at 6:30, but it was easier in the long run. I got there at 6:30 and was promptly taken back to pre-op. I got changed and the nurse came in to prep the area (shave me). It wouldn't have been bad if it was just the nurse, but then my pre-op room was flooded with nursing students and there is honestly no way to have a conversation or make eye contact with anyone while someone is shaving that region.

Next came the bloodwork and IV. the nurse thst did the bloodwork was in and out. The nurse that did the IV twice and missed. She had to get anothe nurse who was able to nail it the first time. Once they got that done and a few other small things, it was go time. Before they wheeled me back. They gave me a mild sedative, got me settled in on the table. They told me I would be under for about 2 hours because they have to get the robot (I had a robotic assisted aurgery) set up. I took a deep breath or two and off to lalaland. I woke up in recovery hurting. After clearing recovery and finally urinating, I was sent home. My wife told me that the surgeon said the inguinal one was the size of the quarter and in a spot that cause more pain than a normal hernia, and the umbilical one was on the right side of the navel.

So I am home now and trying to find a comfy spot to sleep. I am in my little ones room in the rocker recliner and hoping to get a Few hours of shuteye.

Sorry for the long post

Tom

In and out in a day was good?

Have had an inguinal hernia repair previously. Do not do too much too quick. Really important you give it time to mend. No experience of umbilical repair but good luck. Hope all goes well.

Home is better for sleep. You don't really sleep in the hospital.

Hope you make a good recovery, take care it does take a bit to heal.

You did not have any type of tube inserted into you?   I had one which I had to wear for 4 weeks.   It was very uncomfortable, as I am used to sleeping on my left side and that is where the tube was placed.   I had to get air drained out of the tube about 3 times a day.   The spot where the tube was located is still a bit on the sore side- I put antibiotic cream on it every morning and then place a small bandage on top.    Now--- if I could only get my appetite back into full swing!

I didn't Ruth. Luckily neither of the hernias was very large. I have had some seepage from the one incision, but nothing worth worrying about.

But the pain is right up there with when I had my gallbladder removed, maybe a little worse since I have to try to get up from sitting without using my core muscles. Painkillers have been my friend since yesterday.

I have slept in a recliner for the past 3 nights. Going to try sleeping in bed tonight to see how it feels.
