Hi guys, I'm 24 and am having a double hip replacement in the next few months. I am happy it is finally happening as I am in awful pain 24/7, however it is very daunting. Are there any other people around my age in here who have had it done? How are you getting on?
Thanks a lot!
Hi Sean. I a few years older at 38 but had my left hip done 8 weeks ago. Now back at work and driving. I have found its all about how determined you are how well you recover. The first few days and couple of weeks will be rough but but as long as you listen to your body and do as the physios and docs tell you you will be fine. I was off the crutches at 3 and a half weeks and haven't looked back since. Good luck with your op.
Hi Sean
Gosh a double hip replacement..I can only imagine that they have confidence that you are strong enough and recover well...I've had a left knee replacement 7 days ago ( age 56) and am doing well so you at less than half my age will do fine with a double replacement! Just think ahead and of all the things you will be able to do pain free....take care
Hi Sean, your young and will bounce back, not literally LOL crutches will be your legs for a while but even they want be so bad because your pain levels will be so much better.
I have been on them two years and you will possibly be on them 6 weeks, are you having total or partial
Hi, I was 25 when I had a partial hip replacement and 32 when I had a total . You'll be fine. Just make sure that they give you lots of painkillers for when you wake up from the op as younger people feel more pain than older people do. If you're having a spinal, then even better (an epidural like women have for labour).
Recovery should be quick hopefully. As you're young, like I was, you'll be back to better than you are now in no time.
I wish you all the best and feel free to ask any more questions (I've had hip troubles on and off for 15 years so I know quite a bit, unfortunately)!
My friend aged 70 had both hips replaced on the same day on March 7th.- NHS She has recovered well and walked 8 miles 10 weeks later when we were on holiday and I was elsewhere for the day!! Having had a stroke 9 months earlier there were additional concerns and she stayed in hospital 7 nights .as had been scheduled if needed to stabilise blood pressure.. She was a physio (PT) and kept going well with exercises and walking always with 2 sticks not just 1 when you move on from crutches. ! would also say that when she arrived home she had to ascend a long flight of stairs to their living area
Hi Sean! I'm twice your age but I had both hips done 3 months apart. I am glad that part is over it will be a year ago almost for both. As I have gone through physical therapy and staying active and positive have been the main keys to recovery. It is a long journey but everyone is different. You have age on your side so I'm sure you will be fine. Blessings! Teresa
Hi I am not 24 but 70 on week 2 of hip replacement I wish you well
Hey Sean,
I'm twice your age and recently had my 2nd THR this year. Both less than 3 months apart and I'm doing great. No pain killers and was walking cane free at 2 weeks the 2nd surgery, 3 the 1st. The good is the hip pain is gone right away after surgery. Its the rest of the leg muscles/tendons that need recovery. Groin and knee pain will slow you down more than anything. Just take it easy during that period. I use an infrared heating pad daily. I also do all my rehab in a pool for stress-free workouts. Just walk as much as you can tolerate daily. Worry about other rehab stuff after you can walk easily. I went into both of my surgeries in great shape despite all of the pain I was in on a daily basis. After my first surgery in March, I was walking 2.5 miles 3 days a week at 9-10 weeks. Just start by time, not distance. I started with 10 minute walks the first 2 weeks. Today is week 4 and I'm at 30+ minutes. Remember to rest for a day or two. It seems daunting at first but, as each week passes you get better. I'll be surfing again at 3.5 months. One thing you'll notice right away is the feeling like having a 2x4 stuck to the front of your thigh. This slowly fades away over the weeks and as it does your range of motion increases.
Swelling is also pretty common. All the way down to your feet.
Just walk as much as you can tolerate...Go into the surgery in the best possible shape you can...Good Luck...
I am 56 and Just had Bilateral Hip Surgery THR June 27, 2018 The surgery went well talking only one hour to do both sides! My OP was about 3pm, I spent one night in the hospital and went home. it's a little rough the first few days. I spent the first 2 weeks using a walker and pretty much up for just bathroom trips nd did the exercises they recommended. After about 4 days i was off pain meds, now on week 3 the Dr's and therapist's say i am doing outstanding! today July 12th I was getting around with just a cane even though my therapist has not recommended it yet. I worked out with heavy weights 4 days a week for 8 months prior to the operation, I really think that made it easier.
Hi Roger that sounds absolutely brilliant, was it done fast because their where two surgeons both operating at the same time or was it a fast paced consultant, what anesthetic did you have and I'm presuming your not UK
I had one surgeon Nicholas Vialante from Buffalo NY. he seems like a very good surgeon the day I was in he did 4 hips and a knee!
Mine went fast, i had the Anterior Method, he said because I am not over weight and in very good health, He said normally it takes 45 minutes per side sometimes little longer. Also the parts fit perfect first try on both sides, i believe that probably comes from experience, Also I had very little bruising or swelling, I did not need any blood. All Nurses and rehab are amazed! Glad i did both at once and over with.
