Double hip replacement

Hi, I'm having a double hip replacement on 21.5.15, just wondering how I'm going to get in bed and upstairs as everyone says good leg first, but I won't have a good leg.

Ant ideas!

Kaye

Sure how about sitting and scoot up and down on you bum. That will be very safe and easy.lol

Hi Kaye

The first thing I'll say is good luck!

I had my left knee and right hip replaced at the same time just under 7 weeks ago.

The first couple of weeks after I came out of hospital I slept downstairs as I didn't trust myself on the stairs. Once I started on the stairs I found that I led with my right leg (hip replaced) when going up the stairs and with my left leg (knee replaced) going down.

Just take things at your own pace. I've been very fortunate and the physiotherapy services arranged for an additional rail to be placed on the stairs (there's now a rail each side) and grab handles over the bath and by the back door. This has been a tremendous help.

I'm based in Sheffield and I hope something similar can happen in your area.

Please get in touch if you think I can help in any way.

Once again, good luck and please let us know how you get on.

Best wishes

Kevin

Good Luck Kaye let us know how your getting on when your home. ((( hugs )))

Hi Kaye,

I was in this situation and had great help from the physios who worked with me on these things before I left the hospital (they wouldn't let anyone out until they had mastered them!) And then follow-up physio helped too. I'm sure you will have lots of professional support/advice , as well as the practical aids the OTs can supply. Be sure to discuss any worries with hospital staff before you leave,

I hope all goes well for you. Do be in touch if it would help to have contact with another 'double'.

Best wishes,

Maidlin

Hi Kevin thanks for reply, I already have a bed downstairs as its too painful to get upstairs, have installed grab rails in the shower cubical, and have a rail each side of the stairs.

im  based just by Heathrow airport, will let you know how I get on, I'm quite scared about the whole thing, but have no option.

thanks Kaye xx

Thank you will let you know how I get on.

Hi,  Maidlin, I'm sure I will get great help from the physios, have lots of things in place eg home. Will let you know how it all goes.

Lol don't think I will be scooting anywhere.

Hi Kaye , I had a double done 8 weeks ago and doing fine so far . I did wonder about things like getting in bed and such like but was ;nt as hard as I thought it might be , just took it one day at a time . It is hard the first couple of weeks but once past that it was onwards and upwards . If you are otherwise fit and strong you will be fine . It is really good to hear from another double , not many of us . I went for physio today and she told me to take it as a compliment that your surgeon agreed to do a double as he must have thought you were strong enough . I have been driving since my check up last week and going around the house with no crutches . Please stay on here and let us know how it all goes for you , all the best , Ruth

Hi Ruth,  it's lovely to know that yr doing so well, must admit I'm pretty scared, I'm quite fit and strong, my opp is 21.5.15  so not long to wait will be so lovely to get on with my life as its been on hold since January, can't walk without crutches , can't get upstairs , and the pain.

thanks kaye

Dont be scared Kaye , it's really not that bad an experience . I had a general and a spinal so knew nothing about it ! The stuff they give you before you are put to sleep just made me smile and I think I asked if I could take some home with me ! I took my dogs out on my own today for the first time so that was great . Be strong and determined and you will get there . I think I went up stairs a bout four weeks with one crutch and putting the most comfotable leg first , just be really careful . I've been sleeping downstairs for the last 8 weeks and quite enjoying it ! Will be thinking about you 21 st , keep us posted , Ruth
