Driving after akin/scarf bunion surgery?

I am 4 weeks post akin/scarf to both feet.

Generally all is ok with the healing.

Getting very frustrated not being able to walk,swim,drive......lol.

On may 29th I have an x-ray to see if bones are unified enough to start weight baring.

I understand driving is still a way off yet.

But was wonderful how many weeks post op did other people begin driving?

Hi Jessica

I am 18 weeks post op for both feet and still driving my mums automatic!

I had xrays and a check up at 6 weeks and was told I could drive an automatic as long as I could do an emegency stop. Also got rid of the boot at 6 weeks on the right foot but walking is very strange after so long in the boot. I haven't been swimming but I do ride my horse and I can tell you that was odd after so long. I had to work out how to get on without too much pressure on my feet and then how to get off gently so that I didn't jar my toes on landing. Patience is a virtue with this operation, just keep elevating and don't do too much on your feet - the 29th will be here in no time and then you can get going. x

Thanks for your reply x

I think automatic is easier from what have seen on here.

My car is a manual......hmmm...need to think about pressure both feet and emergency stop.gah.lol.

At your 6 week xray did you get rid crutches too?And start wearing trainers?x

Jessica

I didn't use crutches really anyway, only out and about to keep people away from my feet! I was given black velcro boots with funny heels which takes all the weight off your toes and I walked (sort of) out of the hospital after the op.

After the xrays I was told to remove the boot from my right foot but keep the left one on as it was not healing as fast - had fusion of the big toe on that one and screws. I could only get a flat pump on not trainers (unless you've got an old comfy pair that are wide - just remember you have to bend your toes to get them on), my foot still swelled up alot and was tender.  I haven't managed to get a trainer on either of them yet you've got to have enough room for your toes to wriggle around in. I wear Sketchers gowalk now as the sole is really thick and I can wear them all day at work happily. Amazon eat your heart out - ordered and sent back more pairs of shoes and trainers than I care to think about!!

Oh your recovery sounds as though has gone well .. Thinking patience being key.

My recovery and aids has been different.

I have surgical shoes for both feet. .. Wear those when walking...mainly now outside with the crutches.

Inside I waddle on heels from one grab point to another in-between lying down lol.

Different surgeries....I had akin/scarf to both feet.....have 2 screws and 1 pin each.my left is worse.but can bend toes up and down.

I see shoes of any sort are a challenge!!!

What shoes would you recommend?

Hope you continue to do well your receovery x

Hello Jessica.  I wanted to write here the shoes I have found so comfortable.  They are Teva active sandals.  Good wide sole and thin straps over toes and ankle, with Velcro so adjust for swollen foot.  I went from the wedge shoe to this at five weeks, and it was so much better than the wedge shoe.  I saw them online, but bought mine at Blacks outdoor shop, wanted to try them on.

Jackie, you say you use skecher go walk,  I tried them as I have their trainers which I can't where because they are too tight, unfortunately I couldn't get the go walk over my foot.  Did yiu get a larger size or is there a tyoe that fit over the instep?

Thanks Barbara for the recommendation.I shall look into these teva sandles x 😊

Hope you continue to recover well

Hi Barbara

I just had my normal size as I find them quite big. They look like full pumps without the laces, they are really stretchy and thin so no rubbing!
