Driving post op bunion operation

Anyone know whats the best shoe to try and get on to be able to drive in?

I'm five weeks post op and climbing the walls to be able to be independent again.  Just tried to get my trainers on but my foot wouldn't bend enough. Any advice gratefully received.

Hi Jackie

I am 6 weeks post op and have UGG boots and some stout hush puppies sandals and have just started driving. I'm unable to get my trainers on at the moment.

I can also wear my wellies..... good luck!!! You could also try crocs a size too big

Hi Jacckie, I was told I couldn't drive for 6 weeks, I see my consultant at 6 & a half weeks so will wait til then. If you have an automatic car & op was on left foot you can drive after 2 weeks. Frustrating I know but maybe only another week to wait, so maybe best to be patient, good luck, Fiona

Hi. Have you been told that you can wear shoes yet? I could only get walking sandals on when I first stopped wearing the specialist shoes at 6 weeks post op. I wore those for a couple of weeks because of the swelling and the lack of being able to bend toes. After a couple of weeks I could get into walking sandals.

However, I didn't feel confident to try to drive until 9 weeks post op.

I have also found that I need to have shoes which are bigger than previous. The straightening of my big toes has meant that I need to have shoes which are half a size to a full size bigger than before

Thanks everyone for the info. I have ugg boots which was all I could wear before the op - hoped i'd never have to wear them again but looks like they will be coming out again if I can bend my foot!!

I saw the specialist last week and he said I could drive an automatic after six weeks as long as I can do an emergency stop.

I had both feet done but the left foot was worse (screwed and fused) and I have to wear the boot for another month on that foot.

Thought of crocs but they look hard so just ordered Sketchers Mary Jane soft material shoes - will give them a go and report back.

Hi

I'm seven months post opp now but I found crocs fantastic at about six weeks. I did drive short distances at six weeks but found it uncomfortable until 8 weeks. 7 months on and life its so much better pain free and wearing pretty does now. Just hang on in there as its all worth it!!

Hi Jackie, in sept my left foot was done and after 2 weeks I could drive an automatic car. My right foot is done  jan 17, so I am now in my last week. Still have a pin in my second toe, but I tryed already boots, that i bought one size bigger than normal (by purpose). I am sure that I can drive a car from friday on. My foot does not hurt and is already flexible. Must say that swelling is not bad.
