Hi all

Hi Carol I also had RTHR and drive an automatic. I started driving short distances at 4 weeks. Made the mistake of not having a cushion which didn't help the muscle spasms I was having on my right side, an inflatable wedge cushion rectified that. I am now 10 weeks post op and have driven to London this weekend (3 1/2 hour journey) with no problems. Just don't  over do it when you first start.

Hi Carol I am 9 weeks and drive an automatic started driving at 7 weeks.... just short distances at first now driving for about an hour at a time and loving it.

Hi Christine

i so wish I had thought of the cushion, I've got a brill gel one as well!! I could kick myself because I drove today 5 weeks post op and for a while this evening couldn't understand why I hurt so much, thought I'd done no walking and no exercise and then it dawned on me. The driving. I ache in quite a few places so I'm going to start that jigsaw tomorrow that I got out 3 weeks ago!!  Havnt seemed to have the time!!

Thanks for your reply, I think another week will do it for me.

Well done for driving all that way, well done you

hi Gillcati

i think 9 weeks sounds a realistic time for driving.

I i know what you mean, lovely to have a bit of freedom. I went to see my 86 year old mum, only 8 miles away, but realise I'm not quite ready yet. I  feel a bit better and then do too much,  when will I learn!!!

never mind rest tomorrow and maybe dig that old ice pack out!

night night xx

Hi Carol,

I had the same, started driving at 3 weeks short distances. Found my sedan too low and pinched in my groin. Changed over to our 4WD and it's great, nice and upright, easy.

I had to wait until cleared by Dr so it was one of the first questions I asked!!

For me it was easier than preop as even rotating my hip by changing pedals caused sooo much pain.

Hi Carol, I think it depends on whether you had an anterior or posterior op.  I believe you can drive 2-3 weeks post an anterior but rule of thumb is 5-6 weeks post a posterior op.

I'm now 5 weeks and have my follow up appt with surgeon next week so thanks fo the tips on cushions.  Will look into it.

Good morning Carol,

Congrats on getting out and drive !!!  Good advise here re: cushion - I had RTHR, live in Holland (we drive on right side of road) and have a tiny, low seated, stick shift Fiat (different from my automatic American Sedan to begin with) started to drive at 5 weeks post op - my biggest challenge was and still is getting in and out of the car ...watched it on you tube after the frist time I did it on my own - hanging on to the door for dear life and other antics ... I put the cushion in a trash bag so that it was easier to slide in (turn towards sterring wheel) and out ..  Couldn't make more than one stop in the beginning (grocery store)... My physical therapist gave me the OK and showed me exercises to do (sitting and moving right leg from right to left)-

I actually drove better then when I was pre-op ... Unfortunately Left hip is in desperate need of THR - I am still driving though ...

But, as you found out, easy does it ... I have not taken a longer than 40 minutes drive.

Be gentle with your self today -

warm hug

renee

I had my right hip done too and drive an automatic - I waited till I had the ok from the surgeon at the 6 week meet who said I could drive provided I could do an emergency stop. I tested this by switching on and pushing the brake quickly and hard. That felt ok so I started driving. I did only short drives for a week.
