Hi had my bloods done 5 and half weeks a go. levels were 10.02 just had new results .05 so doctor says thats overacive and to alternate 125mg and 100mg alternate. Lots of you that comment on here are very good with the levels. Is it normal for the levels to do this. ? under then over? thanks
Hi Melody, could you tell us exactly what was 10.2 and is now .05 (I suspect you men TSH) and what are the limits you are using. You could also throw in the units, that always helps. Your dosage now is the equivalent of about 113mcg (if we are talking about Levo - and if we are, it's mcg not mg). If it's thyrogold, you might be right.
Let us know more details please, it's hard to guess what you are doing if you do not - and we shouldn't be guessing.
orry all the doctor said the Tsh was 10.2 and after 5 and a half weeks its now .05 was on 100mcg of levy and was put up to 125mcg levy, Bnoween told to alternate dose now one day 100 next 125mcg. Was having sypmtons at the beginning. still having symptons main one flushing and palpatations hoping when i reduce thay will settle. just find it odd for that to happen in 6weeks.
OK, got it. It is not unusual to have such a fast reaction. .05 for TSH, especially after 5 1/2 weeks. The fact that you are having palpitaitons means that you are still probably a bit hyper and your doc has done the right thing. Now you have to reduce your dose to something between the 100 mcg and your new 113 mcg, this is standard procedure. The mid point of 100 and 113 is about 106 and the way you get that is 5 days of 100mcg and 2 days of 125mcg. Do that if your palps persist another couple of days - tell your doc though, just to keep him in the loop.
Hello Melody:
My name is Shelly and I am a nurse in the USA. I have Hashimoto's Thyroid disease since 1987.
When you alternate thyroid meds like Levo you can get a build up of thyroxine T4 inside your blood. This means TOO MUCH is in you and we called that Hyperthyroid, and if you get too much you can feel your heart race and feel kind of anxious and you may have trouble sleeping. The medication has a half life and so adding a higher dose on a certain day would make the level rise in your blood.
It is not good to alternate the dosage because it can do this to you and make you go low on the scale which is normally 0.45 to 4.20 under 0.45 is considered HYPER and OVER 4.20 is HYPO which means too little.
Most people stay on just one dose say 100mcg the whole time. It can take the body about 6 to 12 weeks to adjust to a new level.
Yes, it can happen from one extreme to the other. Hopefully if you stay on the 100mcg dose it will settle down nicely.
Any questions, just ask.
Hi , the whoel story is i was on levy 100 mcg for ten year with no adjustments last test 6 weeks ago now was 10.2 thats why the doctor he upped it to 125mcg new test is now .05 so knowing that do you think i should still just back down to the 100mcg
Hi Melody, Shelley is wonderful and you should take her advice over mine anyday. However, on this one my information was different. I too wondered about the reactivness of T4 in the body. I asked my doctor (who was a very good one) whether on my 137mcg days that I would be all lively and on my 125mcg days I would be calmer, i.e. do you go up and down with your dose. He said that no, you keep the same average (130mcg) level because you are just SUSTAINING a level and that the half life of T4, ~7 days, irons out the up and down effect.
Now, that is what one person said to me and I always bow to experimental or observational facts. If Shelly has observed that the opposite is true, then I would take that to the bank.
thankyou think i will go down to the 100 for the five days then like you said top it up as i dont want it to go back to 10.2 again didnt feel well at all in that range. ill have another blood test in the 6 weeks and then hopefully it will show. if its the right thing for me. you both have been very helpful
Are you from America?
Yes, but I was born and grew up in England, I left when I was 30, so all of my formative years were English, Birmingam to be exact.
Hello Melody:
Remember these hormones pack a punch even though they are in a small tablet. Always if more is needed you add in slowly, because it can bother some people and cause the TSH to go in the Hyper zone.
It requires some experimentation to get it right but give your body a chance to adjust and process the change.
Keep us posted on how you do and how you feel as you go on,
Shelly
Are you saying then i should go back to 100mcg and hope it dosnt go back to hypo? not sure now want things to be normal again. Im just abit confussed with my self.
Hello Melody:
When you go up or down do it slowly. So if your TSH is very low you may need 100mcg for a while and give it a chance to rise up to 0.45 at least, & then if you need more Levo, add it in and stay on that dose for a while and get used to it.
Nobody wants to be Hypo or Hyper but these meds can be powerful so give yourself a while to adjust. Maybe once you have adjusted a bit more you can then try to alternate it but you need to get your TSH back up a bit, so give it a week at 100mcg.
I hope this helps,
Shelly
thankyou
