Hi has anyone had hip replacement with a dropped foot? i have had a dropped foot for several years due to back surgery, scar tissue build up which caused a lot of pain on sciatic nerves and eventually i needed more surgery as i was unable to walk, i was told i had a 50/50 chance of walking again after surgery, i am lucky i can walk again but i have to wear an ankle brace on my left foot, without it i walk like a donkey and have to lift my leg up to clear the floor i always have a fear of tripping which has happened. i have had my right hip replaced in December and i am having left hip done on Monday which is quite daunting as i am not sure how i will manage to walk, i have got a larger ankle support knowing that your legs swell up. If anyone has had similar problem i would appreciate your comments thank you in advance
Hi Cyndey
I have not had THR yet but am facing it. I, too, have had drop foot for about 30 years which resulted from spinal issues. I am looking for the same information you are and hope that someone can answer our questions.
Hi Linda thats about the same as me I havent had any response so far. Hopefully we will hear something between us? I never got chance to ask my surgeon about how I would cope, and had intended to ask him today. I was meant to have my surgery today I was all ready to go and got a call to tell me it was canceled until May! I was very disappointed as I was all ready and had to make plans for my dog to be taken care of and my daughter was taking time off work to look after me, she lives in Scotland and I live in Cleveland which is about a six hour drive so i wasnt happy!!!
I wouldn’t have been too happy either!
I have a terrible time, also, with shoes. I can exert no force through my foot so it is very difficult for me to get a shoe on my left foot. I have only worn tennis shoes for the last twenty years. I am searching for a suitable slip on that will work with my AFO and foot since I won’t be able to tie shoes for a time. Any suggestions?
I notice, also, that there are others following this conversation and I would welcome suggestions from all.
its a nightmare isnt it! i miss wearing pretty shoes and sandals in the summer time, i also wear trainers but at least they are in fashion! i managed to find some slip ons with velcro straps they will do for now they werent expensive its only for convenience as you say we cant fasten laces let alone getting ankle support on! i bought these shoes from a company called chums i just googled shoes with velcro fastening and found chums they were only £12 i bought two pairs one pair bigger to allow for swelling they are ok and delivery was quick might be suitable for you
