E-Coli in blood stream (Infection) Caused by Cholecystitis Inflammation

Hi,

My grandma suffers from gallbladder that caused Cholecystitis.

She got in hospital 4 days ago, having 11.4 WBC, dropped to 9.3 after use of

antibiotics now 3.3 caused by what doctor says: "E Coli infection in blood stream", he also said the word "Sepsis", but after reading about it, it seems uncorrelated with her situation (she feels a little weak but fine in general, no fever at all, she started eating 2 days ago - low fat diet that fitts her gallbladder).

My question is - what is next? the doctor seemed optimistic about

giving more antibiotics in the vein in the next days and that it should be eventually fine.

What do you think? is it common? she is 82 years old.

Thanks!

Hi

When I was 67, I was admitted for five days due to cholecystitis, jaundice and sepsis. I was put on IV fluids and catheterised so they could monitor my input/output fluid levels and also IV antibiotics. Like your gran, I actually didn’t feel too bad. In fact, I felt a bit of a fraud taking up a bed. These days, medics are acutely aware of the risks with sepsis and are getting good at spotting it before it gets bad. If she’s feeling well in herself as you say, I think she’ll make a good recovery. Have they discussed surgery any time soon? To be honest, the sooner the gallbladder is out, the better for her. Leaving a sick gallbladder for any length of time can cause many problems and, as you get older, these are harder to recover from. I have made a good recovery from open surgery I had 18 months ago, but I watch my diet carefully. They tell you you can eat ‘normally’ afterwards, but I think docs mean ‘healthily’. Good luck to your gran.

Thanks!

They want to wait for the inflammation to cure (it is considered a mild cholecystitis) and then

perform the surgery, approx. 2 months from now.

Thanks again!

Best regards!

Hi your message stood out to me, especially the word Sepsis, a friend of mine has this. I really feel for your lovely nan, it’s difficult enough going through gallbladder problems at any age but 82! Wow that lady has really been through it. I truly hope she continues to get better, if you have any medical concerns anything does not seem right! Seek another professional medical advice! Your entitled to ask questions. Sending hugs to you both. Kind regards Joanne
