Hi Renee, I was given Propranolol 10 mg tablets for the fast heartbeat before I was put on Methimazole. I took it as needed and I was supposed to take it every day but it worked for me. The only side effect is it drops my blood pressure really low so I am glad I do not have to take it regularly but is there if I need it. If your specialist prescribes meds (Carbimazole if you are in England or PTU), he will select the dosage based on your lab test results. I have posted to this Board before about what else I did to normalize my blood values and symptoms as well as the meds. There was an Italian study done on hyperthyroid patients in 2001 that showed that they benefitted from the addition of a supplement called L-Carnitine which is an amino acid that is normally found in the body but gets depleted from the muscles of hyperthyroid patients thru urination. Adding this back in helps the body to feel better and recover faster. I tried the regular L-carnitine but found that Acetyl-L-carnitine worked better at restoring normal lab results in me. Found in Health Food stores. Also hyperthyroid patients become deficient in vitamin D and adding this back in also helps your lab results recover. Your doctor will not be familiar with the use of the carnitines so it will have to be a decision that you make based on your research. You can search the Internet for that topic and see what you think but it made a big difference in my recovery when taken along with the prescribed medication.
PS Renee also avoid Aspartame in your diet (a sweetener often found in soft drinks), avoid sugar and gluten as well. Autoimmune diseases are thought to be caused by "leaky gut syndrome" and taking these steps can help you to heal faster.
Hi Renee,
I was on metoprolol for years without any side effects. It's a very commonly prescribed drug. Some people take it just to calm themselves down before a big presentation. I found it good to reduce the heart rate and tremors. I don't think it causes problems in general. Good luck with the specialist.
