Ed Overactive Bladder Enlarged Prostate

Hi all, looking for people’s experiences rather than medical advice, if that’s ok.

I’m dealing with a mix of bladder and prostate issues and trying to find the best medication balance with the fewest side effects.

At the moment I’m using Kentera (oxybutynin) patches for overactive bladder, and I also take tadalafil daily. I have:

  • Enlarged prostate

  • Incomplete bladder emptying

  • Burning irritation in the urethra (especially towards the tip, often at the end of urination)

  • High blood pressure (on medication)

  • A heart murmur (stable, monitored)

  • Erectile dysfunction already present (don’t want it made worse)

  • Cold penis most of the time

  • No infection found on urine tests or swabs

My consultant has suggested possibly switching from Kentera to mirabegron, and adding tamsulosin (or similar) for the prostate side.

My main worries / things I’m trying to avoid:

  • Retrograde ejaculation

  • Worsening erectile dysfunction

  • Blood pressure drops, dizziness, or palpitations

  • Making the burning irritation worse

  • Any heart-related side effects given the murmur

If anyone has real-life experience with:

  • Mirabegron

  • Tamsulosin or other alpha-blockers

  • Switching off oxybutynin

  • Using these alongside tadalafil

  • Or managing bladder + prostate symptoms together

I’d really appreciate hearing what worked, what didn’t, and what side effects you noticed.

Thanks — it really helps to hear how these meds affect people in the real world.

Hi I have had similar problems, did have an operation for enlarged prostate some 10 years ago, however after 10 years and being prescribed Tamsulosin at some stage symptoms returned . together with over active bladder. Consultant reluctant to perform any further prostate surgery due to an on going neuropathy problem I have .Tamsulosin was stopped and I was put on Mirabegron together with Finasteride to shrink the prostate, which did reduce urgency, also self catheterisation which I do, if I know I might be going somewhere and may not have access to a toilet. As a back up especially when out I may wear a male incontinence pad they are very discrete and have prevented some embarrassing accidents in my case. I would just like to add that if you are prescribed Finasteride be aware of the possible side effects most of which you say you want to avoid. In my case after being on it for over 2 years I experienced an increase in the ed which I had, and even with Sildenafil erections were more difficult, also retrograde ejaculations and, a shrinking in penis size I am sure. A lot of users also suffer from mood changes. I have reduced the Finasteride dose which has reduced some of the side effects. If you are a young man this is something you need to be aware of. I mange with the routine I have now an get out and about without having to worry about urgency of having an OAB
