Hi tribe,
I’ve suffered from heavy menstrual bleeding for most of my adult life, and at first it was thought that fibroids were the problem. However, after three unsuccessful transcervical myomectomies, a brief flirtation with the Mirena IUS and the progestogen-only pill, I decided enough was enough and requested a re-referral to my local gynaecology department. Scan revealed four small fibroids (two fewer than I had at my last scan three years ago - where did THEY go?), the largest of which is 3cm. I made it clear that I do not want a hysterectomy, which, given my age (49) and the size of my fibroids would be in my opinion like cracking a nut with a sledgehammer.
However, I’ve been on Norethisterone since April which I hate and am desperate for an end to this heavy bleeding. I did enquire about UFE, but my gynae consultant asked if I had ever considered endometrial ablation. He said it has a higher success rate than UFE, is less invasive and has a quicker recovery time (all of which I need, given that I am self-employed). He also said that since my fibroids are only small, they are unlikely to be the cause of my bleeding and ablation seems more appropriate than UFE for me.
I asked about ablation many years ago, when I was in my 30s, but was told I wasn’t suitable for it. However, having done my research since, it does seem to be more appropriate for women over 40 who are done having kids but don’t want a major surgery like hysterectomy - which is me, in a nutshell.
Just wondered if anyone here with small fibroids has had this procedure or considered it/been recommended for it?
