Endoscopy, any advice or experience

When I went down on Prednisone from 20 mg, 17, then 15, I had chest tightness for 3-4 hours in afternoon.  I assumed it was supplements maybe. I kept taking them at different times and with food but nothing changed.  I assumed it was the Prednisone and ignored it.  Fortunately I don't work (I guess fortunately).

here 5 months later and I have very irritated throat and mouth.  Could be Thrush, or acid reflux, anyway... Wish I could find out sooner! My tongue is raw now. Boo hoo. And now dry mouth. I go in Tuesday.

thought I'd ask my PMR group first if you have had an Endoscopy and what was it like?

Yes, layne, I've had both a top and tail. I opted for a sedative which they injected into my hand. The top, which I was dreading, I can't remember anything about that. It happened so quick. The tail was still painful as they inserted the probe along the colon, then on withdrawel I felt very little. If I was to give both procedures marks out of ten for pain then I'd give them both 2. Tail procedure for embarrassment I'd give it a 10. But the team of Dr and nurses were great in my case and as the nurse told me, don't be embarrassed we do this sort of thing everyday. Regards, tina

Hi Layne I have had the camera down a couple of times and it's not bad at all.  The key is to relax and if you opt to have sedation it's not a bother at all.  Good luck for Tuesday.  Regards Pat

In the meantime, try this

One lemon, microwave for 1 minute (more jiuce) squeeze and divide into three.  Take three times a day (after meal) and see if reflux stops.

I agree with Tina, no problems at all, if given a sedative.  Don't worry!

C.

I had one, when I had a bleeding stomach from long term NSAIDS use, while undiagnosed and in pain from PMR.

Since I also had a colooscopy at the same time, I had to be on all liquids for a day and then did a complete 'clean out.' When I arrived, I was hooked up to an IV and received a sedative. I believe it was Verced or Valium. I went to sleep and then woke up again with no issues. Well, 'no issue' is an exaggeration... I was starving!

Thanks Lodger, I've been using more lemon than ever.  Is it ok to take meds with it? With my raw tongue now I've cut back a bit on lemon.  Since I got on probiotics I'm a bit better, but seems even if I drink water my esophagus still gets that's odd irritated feeling.  NOT sure how to describe feelings to doctors.  It just feels like it's moving around. Maybe it's a spasm???

ive cut out night shade veggies, boo hoo. No more wine, can't taste it anymore anyway, whine, whine, and coffe, but I'm so tired now in mornings I sneak about 2 oz.

so, no one had bad feelings after the test?  In your throat?

I've only had 1 surgery in my life and they put the breathing tube down my throat since I was under anesthesia, and my throat was sore for days.

Have had both too.....didn`t have sedative for endoscopy, because sedatives make me very ill for long time afterwards because of ME/Fibromyalgia....they spray a cold/freeze to numb at back of throat ,and yes it works, didn`t feel anything, and they work quicker!  Others had regularly (5 yearly) becaause of family histiry, but that has changed now to over 55`s beoing offered something different?? waiting to see what that is when have caonsultation in October...but will have a different sort of sedative for that!  My sister had endoscopy last week, didn`t feel a thing, she had sedative, they were marvellous...hope this helps....

Ps, My sister had dry throat for a couple of days....nothing much...

Thank you Linda!!!  I'm going to ask for that numbing instead!!!!  I too don't like sedatives and when had colonoscopy 4 years ago I was awake, asked for minimum and had no problems. I enjoy science, so I liked watching the monitor.  My husband same way.

im good at staying still too, hee, hee.  I just worried about gag reflex.

Gag reflux wasn`t a problem for me, sure you`ll be fine, let me know....A lady I knew had no sedative and was ok, so that`s why I went with it....it`s over so quick, and no after affects.  Lucky for those people who don`t react to medication I say!....

easy peasy. sedative and you don't even know anything about it. worth it to get information on the reflux issues. Prednisone can cause all of this and you want to know the damage.

Well, I did survive, but with all the scary stuff one must sign in case you die, or get infection, or ... When they asked me what religion I was, I knew this was scary!

i said I didn't want to go under, but they wouldn't agree. Then said don't use much anesthesia.  Then I was out, and it's true I can't remember what doctor said after but showed me the pictures and no damage and sphincters  looked good! Yea! Took biopsies, but haven't heard results.

Nurse said no signs of acid reflux!!!!

Today, 3 days later, I got in my car, started it, sat for a minute thinking, then started looking for my keys to start my car!!! 😛

I decided NOT to drive, my husband said, go google anesthesia and short term memory... Ha!!!

No, it was a PMR or senior moment.  Don't we just love them?
