ER for panic attacks question

For those that have gone to the ER for a panic attack, I was wondering what your bill came to? I went to the ER back in Sept bc I thought I was dying or having a stroke. I was in there for maybe 30 min to an hr. I got my bill and it was almost $1000 for hospital alone. $180 for ambulance and $70 for xrays. That seems kind of high to me, I was expecting more like $300. I've heard a lot of people going to the ER multiple times and I'm like how can they afford it?? And this is with good insurance. Without insurance would have been around $7k Anyway, I was wondering if this is the typical cost or if it seemed high?

You might have PPO plan. You pay more, but you have more options with doctors to pick. Check your insurance policy.

I have HMO, have very limit option, but co-pay is lower. I paid just $50 for each ER visit because I drove there. If I use the ambulance, I have co-pay $500.

The ambulance ride was cheap in my opinion. Usually my visits in the past came to $1000 despite having a $300 co-pay for the emergency room. What happens is the facility is covered but the doctors are subcontracted. This means I get a separate bill for (out of network) doctor that does not accept my insurance even though I went to an approved in network ER room. The ER bill comes to $300 for the deductible and usually around $750 for the doctor that talked to me for about 5 minutes. When you go to pay them they pretend to be dumb about this situation but its done on purpose to work around co-pays and haggling with insurance companies. Usually I can talk the doctor bill down to $350 when connected directly to the doctors firm that represents them.
