Excruciating pain over op site

I'm 4 days post op but I have excruciating pain over my operation site.it feels like all the stitches are ripping inside. There is no way I can get out of bed without a lot of assistance and then I am screaming in pain. I've had a knee replacement and then a revision on the same knee and it hasn't been nearly this bad.

Because of the knee replacement the surgeon had to do a posterior approach. Is this normal? I think something may be wrong.

Are you still in hospital? If so I suggest you ask for a visit from the consultant, if not get in contact with him/her fast. You may just need some more painkillers or there may be something not quite right. The faster it is diagnosed the faster it can be dealt with. All the best and keep us posted

Hi

it could just be that you are not on top of your pain with the pain killers. If you think you are and the pain has become worse then I would seek medical advice. If you thought things weren't too bad so you didn't keep on top of the pain relief then it could take some time for you to get it under control again.

I had posterior and had not anticipated the extent of the pain I would be in.  I can only describe it as bloody agony until I got the pain relief right.

Good luck x

Do you put ice on it? At 4 days I kept an ice bag on it most of the time AND took all pain meds at prescribed times. I had anterior hip op 12 weeks ago. I used to read the hip forums before I had the operation and they said to ice it a lot and take your pain meds. Hope that you get to feeling better!

No pain like that but i still have difficulty geting out of bed. The pain is in the groin. The pain is when i am pulling myself to a sitting position. My surgeo said he went in from behind. Im guessing thats a posteriot cut.

I had a lot of pain with my wound and being posterior it was agonising to sit/lie on it but I asked for more pain relief which helped me get on top of it ! I only had dissolving stitches and glue . Have you hot staples ?

if it is no better please ask for help

good luck 🌸

Hi Kikeena,

Yes the pain from posterior surgery can be agonising in the early days but with the correct meds most of us find it bearable. If you are having absolutely everything you are allowed in the way of pain relief and you still really can't bear it then you need to seek medical advice. It may be that the stitches/staples or whatever you have had to close up the wound are too tight or uneven so are pulling unequally etc and need revision.

We all have to grit our teeth to get through the early days but some of can often need that little bit more help than others so you mustn't suffer in silence. If you need more pain relief then you must ask for it.

Good luck and keep us posted xx

Thank you for your responses. It's so so very encouraging to discuss this with people who have been through it. I think my pain meds are not quite enough so I have made sure I had them 30 minutes before getting up today and it was much better. It's good to know that other were surprised by the level of pain.

After writing that sentence the pharmacist visited and said 'You're not on much'. So I think I need to make sure I keep taking the maximum that I'm prescribed.

Thank you fellow hippies!

I kept my pain under control by religiously taking 1000mg Paracetamol and 60mg Codeine every 6 hours for the first 2 weeks. Combat the codeine's unwanted side effect with Lactulose, and enjoy the sleep! I am now 8 weeks post-op and right as rain! Good luck with your recovery - there are some monumental good days ahead of you!

Hi...Yes it is more painful than I expected but I use Tramadols 2X50mg and in Hospital they gave me 1G of Naproxin, now those made me sweat a bit but Killed the pain...The first week is the worst week, I have had both hips replaced this year, and back at work now, still sore on the wound a little but no pain in my hips at all...Phew.....
