Exercise at 15 days post op?

Hi fellow hippies......

I am now 15 days post TLH operation and coming along slowly now  am on one crutch and out nice slow strolls morning and afternoon in the sun. Also, learning to be patient which hasn't been easy as love my sport and use to faster way of life.

Would like to ask anyone about your experience, help, knowledge etc about any exercises I can now try and gently test myself on at this stage of recovery please ?

One thing for sure is my tummy getting a lot of muscle exercise from my appetite gone into 5th gear since my op.

Very best wishes to you all recovering hippies and good luck to all about to have theirs done. Special thoughts to you.

Cheers.

Hey hippie Kevin, group,

sup?

well, I think we are similar, 15 days post op and unlike some folk here blessedly all seems to go wellso far. My transition to one crutch was fairly seamless, I'm climbing stairs without an aid, and taking about 10 faltering steps in loungue with a crutch, which is scary. At 22 days, hope more confidedent walking maybe?

I do get tightness and pain in groin esp after sitting in an upright chair for over an hour, which radiated down to knee. I'm taking paracetemol when this happens...

Exercise - excellent question. I'm going by taxi to a gig tonite, and much sit still and not bop - soooo frustrating. My gym want me to bring in a note after 6-8 weeks from the physio so I can resume gym and swim.I'm aiming at gentle jogging at 12 weeks too.

Bestest, Mic

For now its the exercises in the hospital book

Hi kevin, I'm only five days po, but having to hold back , still on two crutches but im quite agile on them lol. I would listen to your physio is all i can say, i know alot of people say they are able to go swimming and cycling after the six week point . But each of us is different .... Good luck to you on a speedy recoverysmile.

Hi kevin amd Mic

Glad to hear you're both doing so well

I'd be interested to know how old you are as it seems younger people recover much quicker from this op than older folk - makes sense I suppose!

Were you not given exercises by the physio at the hospital? The physio came to see me on days 2 and 3 and gave me ones to do at home, plus an appointment to go back and get more (more challenging ones he said!) after about 3 weeks.

Right on Mic. Thanks for info and enjoy your Des O Connor gig tonight. Bopping to dick a dum dum not easy biggrin

Kee on with updates as so useful.

Cheers

Kev

Many thanks Jas, good to hear you getting on well as sadly some I've read having post op troubles.  I feel very lucky at the moment but don't want to ruin it by doing something stupid....ie....hoovering....ouch my missus just read that.

Keep updating if u don't mind as any info so grateful.

Good weekend

Kev

If you were given an information booklet at the hospital, there are exercises in there which you can do, there are also some on the NHS internet site, but take it gently at first.  The Physio at the hospital told me I could go on an exercise bike at the gym but not on the road until 3 months in case you have to stop suddenly or in case you hit any potholes.  After 11 weeks I went back to my swimming which is great and its not weightbearing, keep up with the walking you seem to be doing well with that. Best wishes.

Hi Matt,

Cheers for your reply.

Only four basic exercises were told which I have been gently doing. Just enquiring about more demanding ones and at what stage/time. Am not in any hurry smile

 I am  53, look 153, feel 253 lol

Cheers

Kev

Hi Barbara,

Manythanks for your reply and advice. Will put that to practice although will have to get bell and stabilisers for my gym bike....then aim to do Tour De Holland route on it. Also he swimming but I believe not the breaststroke ?.

If you don't mind me saying but sounds your recovery went well and now bouncing around like Tigger.

Best wishes and thankyou

Kevin

Hi Kevin,

I'm 58 and 7 weeks post op, I'm now driving and walking around house with no crutches but take 1 when I'm out walking longer distances for support. I've been hoovering for about 2-3 weeks now so your chance will come lol !.

Just keep going as you are and your body will tell you when you can do more, you're doing really well.

Keep going with the exercises you have been given and the walking and the rest will come in time.

It is amazing that suddenly over night you feel you can do more.

Hi Kevin   I am now thirteen days post operation.   You seem to be doing very well.  I am using one crutch sometimes indoors only,  Have been for a few little walks outside but find I have been suffering for it so perhaps I should slow down a little. I shall be glad to take this plaster off on Tuesday does that make things feel easier?  I too am very impatient and cant wait to get back to my wood with my dog.  Hoping for your continued progreass,  cheers

Hi Kevin, Matt, All,

excellent discussion this........

gig tonight is African fusion, can't stant Des O'Connor - tis Baka Beyond and Seckou Keita - djembes and kora for tingle factor.

Matt, wish I had a 'half time' phyio appt to revise and update: meanwhile I'm sticking closely to most of the exercises given by physio at hospital, bar a couple which intuititively seem too much too soon. Tomoro hopefully I walk a mile back from pub lunch, onwards and upwards. Does anyone agree with my gym in 8 weeks and jogging in 12 weeks post op plan?

i should have said 10 faltering steps without crutches: oh and my lady has to put my sox on for me cos the sox helper gadget is pants.

Oh and I'm 70, look 53 on a good day, and inside I'm about 8yo.

good luck everyone

Mic

Hi Kevin,

its so different for everyone!  I am ancient at 66!  I had the physio come in on the morning of my op to run through the first basic exercises, which they encourage you to start doing straight away. As soon as the epidural wore off, which was about 6 hours, I was up and walking with a frame. I came home in 48 hours on crutches.

i am now 5weeks post-op and I am walking happily without crutches or sticks and with no pain!!

the big difference with me, is that I never progressed further than the basic exercises because I have a back condition and the exercises were bringing on nasty attacks of Sciatica. I just concentrated on walking and I can do a mile (with a sit down and a cigarette half way!!).  We just have to listen to our bodies.  I am with my animals, if it hurts, rest it until it heals.  Not for everyone!

I wish you good luck and a quick recovery, you,re doing great!

Best wishes

Sue

Hi Christine,

Thankyou for your reply and notably hoovering looming again in the future...!!!! Lol.

Yep, will continue the exercises and walks and hopefully like yourself will feel more with it in few weeks time. In mean time I'll just suffer with my feet up watching the rugby whilst my lovely wife brings in the odd cuppa or dram each half and half time.

Manythanks and best wishes

Kevin

Hi Marlene,

Your doing very well and won't be long before spring walks in the woods with your beloved dog. We are hoping to get one soon as be taking early retirement soon.

Agree with you about the plaster. Mine will be initially coming off this coming Monday as I will be having my staples removed. Hmmm, doesn't sound pleasant so will have man leg for rest of week !!! You have staples or glued ?.   Showering the wound area is very soothing but about an hour later the pullb sensation happens again. Ughhhh.

Hope all goes well with your recovery with best wishes to you.

Kevin

Mic,

Enjoy tonight....and pub strolls, like the style. Will be planning my local pub strolls soon.

Agree with the sock puller, total pants. My good lady doing the honours but she got fed up with it the other day, so I showed her the Lady Scandinavian home help team photo in our local papers and said I'll sign them up as replacement......was back n A & E with saucepan on my head. Strange.... sad

Good luck and keep well

Kev

Enjoy while you can Kevin.

Cheers Sue. Thankyou for your lovely reply. I'll go for the mile stroll then half way dram of whisky smile

I will be taking my time and not pushing it but will ensure regular exercise and strolls and then increase the strolls bit by bit. Will get there in the end one way or other.

Keep well and have relaxing and fun weekend.

Kev

Be careful of the whiskey Kev!   There,s bound to be a law relating to drinking and Crutch control!!

Cheers!

Suexx

Nice one. smile
