Exercise following hip replacement

Hi all! Had my hip replaced last year, aged 51, mainly due to car accident 15 years ago which included impact to left side of body, leading to severe degenerative arthritis. Have always exercised, mainly football and, running, so although I've knocked the footy on the head, wanted to try to continue with the running...nothing too far, just a couple of miles,  2 or 3 of times a week. Started off ok, but last couple of weeks have not been able to get too far before I get like a pain that starts in my bum and shoots down into my left thigh, goes no further than just above my knee but prevents me from running any further. I can continue walking but if I try running again can only get a few yards before it comes back again. No repurcussions after I've finished my run, its only while i'm running. Vey frustrating and wonder if anyone has had anything similar or could advise what problem might be. TIA

Following my THR, my surgeon told me no more high impact exercising. Your replacement parts might be telling you the same thing.

I was also told no running for exercise. Low impact exercise is great/encouraged.  Good luck to you!!!

Yep. Sorry to say it. No running. You could use an elliptical machine so no impact. Or power walk. Bush walk. Bike ride. Swim?  Good luck finding new sport.

Same as your other replies I'm afraid, Browny. I am 7 weeks post op with everything going really well but have told very definitely - no high impact exercises with running being top of the list. I think you'' have to accept that you need to choose a different sport. The most important thing is to look after that replacement hip.

Running puts a LOT of strain on all the parts, particularly where the stem is inserted into the femur. In worst case scenario, if the femur starts to split it could push the stem right into it. I'd say ask the surgeon, get an X-Ray, and be content with walking.

I am just 8 weeks post revision, and doing a lot of walking, both outside, and in the gym, but I don't exceed 5kph (about 3mph).

Same as the others have said I'm afraid, I am 5 months post LTHR and the one thing my consultant said not to do was go running, I now cycle 30 to 40 miles of road 3 times a week and feel no niggles or anything so might be something for you to consider.

Thankyou for all your replies! You are all just telling me what I already knew...but just didn't want to accept!!  My consultant told me the same as did my wife, friends and finally..... my body!!. Time to come up with Plan B!!
