Exercise is key

Something that has surprised doctors in the hospital here is how I am able to walk with a shattered ceramic hip replacement.

I can only put it down to lots of exercise in the last 2.5 years. Start slowly and build up length of walks.

Looking at my blog (see web address in my personsl info page) I built up from town centre pavements with few hazards to country paths and field edges.

More recently I joined a gym, and have been doing strengthening exercises under the guidance of a personal trainer.

Graham, I think we are all surprised you can walk with your shattered hip. I hope the doctors do not think 'oh he is okay for a bit' and delay your op.

Like I say every individual recoups differently some will have difficulty some will have minimal backlash. I was mowing my lawn in a riding mower 4 weeks after surgery. So people have different needs and that is absolutely fine.

I think you're right Rocketman I'm in my seventies and did my pre and post operation exercises even though it was occasionally painful and it has payed off. I'm half way through my 6th week and already able to walk short distances unaided although I will carry on with the crutches for as long as it takes. I believe that if you stop using them too soon you can end up with a limp.

Yes,you're righ5. Continue to use crutches as long as you need the support they give you.
