Exercise?

I've been trying to keep up my running and biking.  Need to start off slow because of stiffness.  Can I be doing any harm?

well i do a lot of walking, even if its just going shopping, or on the greenway(old railway paths) on holiday i was doing only 3 miles a day, and i do think i over did it, along with reducing too much. I think we should keep moving, i try to do what i did before all this as i dont want iot to beat me.

i  wodnt   think so    just dont over  do it

Hi Ingo, exercise is very good for PMR sufferers. But we must remember to not over do it because we will suffer for it. Although bike riding will be good for your cardio vascular system it will not really be helping your muscles as we really really need weight bearing exercise to help our muscles and joints.

How you can still run is beyond me! I haven't been able to run properly since I developed PMR symptoms. My legs feel so heavy, so good for you if you are capable of doing that, especially as you have only just started your PMR journey. Running us a weight bearing exercise so is very good for your muscles and joints. However, walking is very good for you. I walk daily but only fast enough that my heart rate is just raised. And, only a mile aday. Regards, christina

Christina,  Thanks for your support.  I'm overwhelmed by to amount of support and sharing I've received from this group.  It definitely helps.

Hi Ingo,

I was an avid backpacker, hiker, walker and biker pre PMR.  I can still do easier hikes which makes me happy because I love being in the trees and beside lakes, rivers and creeks which we have an abundance of in our area but no more backpacking and only easier hikes once a week or so.

i have found that I can walk 6 or 7km but not 2 days in a row.  I don't necessarily get muscle pain when I over do it but my whole body gets tired and I know I need to rest.  As Christine says, you need to be especially careful when decreasing your pred.

I bike when I can't walk but again, the length is determined by what I have done in the previous day's.

it's wonderful you have been able to keep your activities going but please listen to your body and take it easy if it tells you to.  Sometimes your muscles play a trick and you don't know you've overdone it until later and you find yourself sacked out on the couch.

Have a wonderful day!!

You will know soon enough if you are overdoing it. I find PMR can be quite intolerant to exercise and can cause pain if you are not careful. As others have said weight bearing exercise is good as this will also help your bones against the effect of the steroids. I do go swimming which I love, but it is probably not so good as walking, although I do walk to the swimming pool.

Hi Indigo,

I have s;owed down some but still try to maintain what I was doing before PMR. Like your legs, mine feel very heavy most days especially at the start. I just passed my 75th birthday the other day. I am at 11 mg of pred heading for 10mg.  My wife and I are still able to walk off 4 miles in an hour. I did 10 days of down hill skiing this winter , 4 in January and 6 in February and held up well. They were consecutive and I did not fall apart on the last day. I do make time for naps ( when I am not skiing) almost daily.

too true Diana, as i found out Easter sunday when i went for a walk with my family, not a long one but hills to walk up (not helvellian) and i feel asleep straight away, i am learing now on sorry to harp back to it, but i do think after reading your comments this is what happend on holiday, i was reding from 10 to 7.5, then walking 3 miles for 3 days and 2 maybe the rest of the week, out all day, i must have been mad, but hubby will have to take notice next holiday that i cannot do what we did. bless him.

how do you walk in the pool, my legs dont touch bottom in the near shallow end

wow chasrlie you are doing really well.

I don't! I just swim. I tend to do back stroke more than other strokes as I find that breast stroke particularly can be painful on my shoulders. I think I can just about touch the bottom at the very edge. I also do cycling movements and other exercises. There are bars that I can hang onto for exercising.

Ingo,

We probably would not have done the skiing but Sept. ( just before PMR set in) we brought ski passes for 10 days of skiing at a real discount, but still expensive.

We didn't want to waste the money so off we went.

I saw that another offer for the "Epic Pass" came in yeaterday's mail offering unlimited skiing at Vail and several other areas in that locale and Heavenly Valley in the Tahoe area of Calif. for $769. Have to buy by April 12th. Daily ski  ticket price at Vail is $149 !!!

I did mention PMR in this, didn't I ?

Good luck with skiing.  I am very frustrated because we have had so much snow in Mass. and I wasn't able to get out and cross-country ski due to shoulder and arm pain.  Hopefully next year.

Hope your shoulder and arm get better.

Thanks Charlie,  Sounds like you and your wife are doing well.  Hang in there.
