Exhaustion

hi everyone.  Me again...I'm 8weeks post TKR and not doing too badly apart from the usual sleepless nights, stiffness and ache at back of knee, etc etc but I wondered if anyone else experiences getting  to about now (7pm) ish and feeling absolutely exhausted, and every part of my body hurting?  I had to go to bed this afternoon and slept for an hour but still feel dodgy.  Is it still my body recovering from the operation?  Lord knows how I'm going to be able to go back to work in four weeks time - not gonna happen.

Hi only had a small op bit constantly tired. It has been said that the anasectic stays in your system for months and the drugs you take makes you feel like this. Went for a small walk after 10 days but very tired now. Hope you feel better soon but don't think is unusual for you to be this tired . Regards Bev

Hi Elaine94716, I, too, am at 8 weeks and the exhaustion in the evening must be par for the course as I am experiencing the same.  At a dinner party last night at 9pm, I just told everyone that I was fading fast so everyone understood and the evening ended.  I was so tired.  Also, the sleepless nights are my biggest frustration.  I can walk around all day and feel good and then at night the muscles in my leg just seem to seize and I cannot get comfortable.  We must be at about the same point in the process.

A TKR isnt a minor bit of surgery. It is major surgery Of course you are still recovering from it. Because you can walk & do exercises doesnt meen that everything should be sorted. It will take a few more weeks yet

Im 7.5 mths & can now walk over 3 miles, have some muscle pain but some nights wake up because of my knee. I must turn onto my back and my knee goes straight with the muscles objecting. It'll go Ill just give it time and TIME heals so just wait

Oh yes - sound normal to me and many others on this site. Hopefully things will start to get better in terms of exhausttion once everything is less of an effort. Four weeks can make a big difference but if you are not ready to go back see if you can get a phased return or put it off another 2 weeks. I am 15 weeks tomorrow and only now do I feel I should be back at work (even though I went back ages ago) and am still tired in the evenings bit definitely improving physically and mentally. 11 weeks was a hard week for me but everyone's body is different in their ability to recover so listen to your body - it's tired!

hi elaine im nearly 10 weeks and exactly the same!!! at 17.30 tonight I could quite cheerfully have gone to bed but 2 weeks ago I went to see my cons and he told me it would be mid july beg aug before I could return to work and he said even uf your knee seems fine youve been deprived of sleep and been physically exhausted and you neef to get better AND then rest!!!!! which makes sense really???

Oh dear, I'm only pkr on day ten, and by five pm I've had it, I don't go to bed, no point, can't get comfy,,  I no you had tkr but this all last so much longer than I thought, 😞

Right, you are still getting meds out of your system, rebuliding lost blood and trying to get your strength back from a couple of weeks of sliding downhill immediately after surgery plus your appetite has probably been minimal. Make sure you are getting plenty of fluids. Not flushing the system and dehydration is the biggest culprits of energy loss. I'm now 9 weeks out from having the hardware removed to fight the staph and the last 0 days I have started feeling a littler closer to normal but still very weak because I can't actually rehab the leg as it is immobilized and I ant put much weight on it.  6 more weeks to get my strentght back and get ready to have the new knee reinserted.

Thanks oldfatguy.  When you look at it like that I suppos it's  no wonder I my exhausted.  I hope your next operation is successful.  What is staph?  Sounds like you've had a terrible time. X

I was going to ask the same thing but didn't like to, I assume you got an infection in your knee?

Thanks Andrea I think I need to take your message to my GP and ask for more time!  It's no joke is it.  I'm so glad of this forum I feel like I have lots of new friends who understand.  Thanks x

Thanks Caroline, I think I will need more time, I can't even stay out all day yet let alone commute to work for 8 o'clock and not get home till 6. I think I might have to rethink my job.  Even after a phased return it seem iossible to me at the moment.  Although perhaps I will feel better in a few weeks time.  Her very brave going back at 11 weeks. X

That's very encouraging to hear that you walk 3 miles.  I was totally unprepared for how long and hard this journey would be. I don't fancy having my other knee done now! X

Toni I was so pleased (if that's not being horrible) to hear that you are the same!  I've got friends who keep asking me to go out for an evening but I can't do it !  We are about at the same stage my op was 9 March.  The nights are so annoying aren't they.  I can't remember when I last had a full night sleep. X

Thanks Bev I didn't realize we are still processing the drugs. I'm taking cocodamol and ibuprofen and have been for years to be honest .  Operations are no picnic. X

It is so long ago since I had my TKR 3 years now but I have only recently joined this group. So it is difficult to remember what I was like at your stage I'm afraid. I initially joined the group because I had gallstones and had my gallbladder removed a couple of weeks ago.

Then I came across this knee problem group, you all seemed to be really struggling and I thought I would give you all some encouragement.

Now 3 years on all the hard work has paid off and it is like having my life back, Things will ge better.

Keep up the exercises and good work

Love Ssarah xxx

I am 6 days ahead of you and I too am exactly the same. I can potter about the garden all afternoon then as soon I come indoors and relax I just want to sleep. Body is totally exhausted then I get restless leg syndrome it's terrible. It's worse since my surgery does anyone else have this? Tgen come tge sleepless nights.

It's staphylococcus infection I think

Sounds terrible, really hope they sort you out, 😱😞
